Review Summary: Controlled Demolition

Bannon and co. return kicking and screaming on ‘Beautiful Ruin’, mopping up the last few tracks from the ‘The Dusk in Us’ recording sessions in a blazing 7-minute EP. Severed from the LP to remedy some tracklisting disagreements within the group, the 4 songs here are arguably everything that ‘The Dusk in Us’ was not: short, sweet and savage. In contrast to that record’s tense and patient compositions – adored by some, detested by others – the tunes here are fervent, mangled barnburners. There’s a ‘You Fail Me’-esque ferocity to Bannon’s vocals – his verses venomous, his stanzas spiteful. Koller’s drum fills are suitably urgent, crashing and spilling atop typically tangled guitars. Whilst most songs don’t even scrape the 1:30 mark, each captures a distinct sound and presents a pleasant progression, each budding brazenly and bleeding fuzz. The resulting cacophony is an antithesis to the majority of the criticisms levelled at the LP, a raucous companion piece that may indeed (in line with Bannon’s predictions) surpass some of the album material. In short, Converge prove once more that they have nothing left to prove.

yeah only leaked yesterday I believe.

tried to do a short and sweet review; didn't want people spending longer reading this than listening to the actual album. so enjoy the glorified sound off. c/c always appreciated.

Wow, what a great soundoff/review man, huge pos. I can literally hear the album in my head without playing a single song just based on your descriptions. Keep it up man, you're very good!

Beautiful POS.

Don't rain on my parade, Uni, I know it's a stretch. But POS Ruin would be a neg, so.

Good stuff. Bought the 7" even if it's just so I'll have the full collection of the songs from this album cycle on wax.
