Review Summary: Very good as a teaser of future melodic pop to come from Frisch
Eric Frisch, the Toronto musician who has decided to move his trade to New York has been coming up with some quietly excellent melodic pop-rock releases for some five years now, with two albums and two prior EP’s before the current Head Up In The Clouds, and while his studio releases haven’t made a bigger splash yet, he seems to be gathering some healthy live audiences.
Head Up In The Clouds, the new EP is yet again a showcase how to come up with some distinct, clear melodies with a warm, understated production and layered vocals without either overproducing or going the standard voice/guitar singer/songwriter route. The title song is a prime example with its slow buildup to a slick guitar line and chorus.
The other two songs here, “Angeline” and “I Can’t Sing With A Broken Heart”. The former starts out like a studio outage Fleetwood Mac might turn into one of those humongous hits, particularly after the rhythm section and gently multi-tracked vocals come in, begging the question - why can’t it be a hit for Frisch too?
Frisch saves the best for last here, with “I Can’t Sing With A Broken Heart” coming up with some great harmony vocals and the whole tune reminding us why, for example, Cat Stevens had such a huge success with his Tea For Tillerman album.
As many EP’s Head Up In The Clouds seems just like a teaser of what might be coming up on a forthcoming album release. Hopefully, there is one coming soon from Eric Frisch.
