This has not aged well and now it sounds pretty embarrassing although track two is kinda alright

The Ascent Of Everest attempt to make a masterpiece from taking their well picked influences such as Godspeed You! black Emperor and Do Make Say Think and put them into one, and they almost pull it off. How Lonely Sits the City had the potential to be a pretentious piece of unoriginal garbage, although it is kind of a poor man's Lift Your Skinny Fists, they for the most are able to stand on their own with atleast a couple saving melodies on almost every track (As the City Burned We Trembled for We Saw the Making of Their Undoing in Our Own Hearts being the one that lacks anything special.)
Really trying to describe this though, is very hard because as pros almost completely erase the near none existing cons, the cons are much easier to describe then the pros, but what I can say this that Threnody For The Victims Of November Second is one of the best songs of the year.
Although explaining this would make it sound like your average Godspeed You! Black Emperor wanna be, as how it goes with alot of bands of the genre, let me in insure you that is record is phenomenal showing boatloads of potential for a masterpiece.
In summary, The Ascent Of Everest knows how to pick their influences.

4.0 excellentElectric City | August 23rd 08

How Lonely Sits the City is one of those albums where the whole is less than the sum of its parts. Spoken word samples and doomtastic strings of Godspeed? Check. Sweet vocals reminiscent of Do Make Say Think and Sigur Ros? Check. Disgustingly long novellas for song titles? Unfortunately, yes. But while all these things are fine and dandy, The Ascent of Everest sounds just a bit too latched on to their contemporaries to say anything of real relevance. This isn't to say the album isn't a great post rock record. There's chill-inducing crescendos and cymbal smashing all around, and each of How Lonely's five tracks has some element to give it merit. The absolute standout is "A Threnody," which poignantly uses an excerpt from Mario Cuomo's speech at the 1984 Democratic National Convention to devastating effect.

For a post rock novice, this is a great starting point for the genre, as it's less (musically) pretentious than Godspeed and less intimidating than Sigur Ros circa ( ), but to the post rock aficionado, How Lonely Sits The City is fairly ho hum. I still recommend it though, because all in all, this is a pretty damn solid record.

I enjoy post-rock. I like songs that drag on. These songs somehow drag on too long.rIf some of these songs were 1-4 minutes shorter, this would be much more listenable. It is too bad as Alas Alas! The Breath of Life! becomes wondrous but then it fades into the norm.

If they just took the first minute and a bit of the second track and put it on repeat for 45 minutes, this would probably be a 5. The rest of the album is almost as good as that violin riff.

The Ascent to Everest's music is stunning, containing elements of classical music in their post rock goodness. Beautiful violins and an atmosphere like no other, How Lonely Sits the City shows the world what the band could be, but some songs seem to drag on and on, which is a shame because everything else about How Lonely The City Sits is great.
