Review Summary: A near-essential journey of the Motorpsycho club!

Motorpsycho is a Norwegian rock band formed in Trondheim in 1989. The band's lineup has undergone several changes over the years, but during the release of "Angels and Daemons at Play" in 1997, the core members were Bent Sæther, Hans Magnus "Snah" Ryan, and Håkon Gebhardt.

The band's ability to blend various musical genres, including progressive rock, psychedelic, and alternative rock seamlessly makes this release engaging and exciting throughout its 56 minute runtime. “Walking on the Water” is a driving pop-rock anthem that delivers a catchy hook that will be an earworm the rest of the week. “Heart Attack Mac” is a punchy grunge-inspired tune featuring some excellent riffage and grating vocals that work hand in hand in the best of ways.

“In the Family” is an early highlight of the album displaying a catchy riff filled with syncopation and unease until the chorus comes blasting in featuring the soaring vocals of Saether. The band spaces out over the fourteen minute runtime of the next track entitled “Un Chien D’espace”. The song toes the line of progressive rock and psychedelia quite nicely and has a fitting build that winds its way across a wash of musical landscapes before collapsing inward at the end with frantic riffs and drums smashing every which way until the fadeout.

The album takes a dip in quality for the back half with “Sideways Spiral II” being an exercise in patience as Saether screams out “spiral” a seemingly infinite amount of times before the song comes to a jarring halt. The following four tracks range between pop-rock jams tinged with indie tones to restrained acoustic numbers with soft vocal deliveries and competent harmonies that are both raw and poignant.

Although this album does not reach the heights of its predecessor, Timothy’s Monster, it would be a disservice to ignore it entirely when exploring the subtle magic that is the oft-overlooked early-career Motorpsycho.

Thought I would drop another quick review on this band. Travelling through their discography at the moment for the 100th time basically so they deserve the recognition.

Always happy to see a review for these guys, one of the best bands on planet Earth and beyond. Actually I haven't checked this one, which is not strange considering how crazy stuffed is their catalogue.

Also happy to see Spidergawd on the rec section, I actually reviewed "V" a few years ago, really good band too.

You should give this a spin! There are plenty of otherworldly-good tunes on this one but it is weighed down by a little "meh" here and there. I think following up Timothy's Monster was nearly impossible but this is more than passable attempt even though its outshined by most of their catalog. Un Chien De Space is magnificent and worth all the praise alone.

Nice thanks for reviewing this! I'm sure many Motorpsycho fans would gut you for only giving it a 3.5 though!

It always makes me sad that Have Spacesuit, Will Travel isn't on the CD/streaming version of this, I love that track and all their long jams.

I couldn't bring myself to drop the 4.0 on it....its just missing a little something for me. Have Spacesuit is something I always forget about. Gotta jam that today at work. Thanks for the reminder that tune exists!

Haha maybe that's what's missing to make it a 4!

If that tune was actually part of this official release I would definitely have to rethink my decision. More Motorpsycho reviews coming this week

Been missing from Sputnik lately and so missed this review! Props for reviewing this one and giving it a thread, and also for freeing me from the constant guilt over not finishing my own review (I still have the draft but it's been dormant for months, if not a year lol).

That said I may get to finish it sooner or later, because our views about the album definitely differ. This is my favorite Motorpsycho, or at least so is the full original vinyl tracklist which included Have Spacesuit Will Travel and Back to Source inside the tracklist, making the full album much more consistently space rock related. Which is why I was planning to review the comprehensive deluxe 6CD set to discuss everything related to the album and slap a fat 5.0 on it

Yeah I am constantly trying to revisit all their albums and see where they land in my enjoyment spectrum across the discography. This band is so varied and different throughout the course of their career it really makes each release special. I find that my favorite Motorpsycho is the one I just got finished listening to that day
