Review Summary: Of Mice & Men come back with a bland effort to act like nothing's missing.

Following founding member, Austin Carlile’s departure, Of Mice & Men come back with a bland effort to act like nothing’s missing. Of Mice & Men have been one of the most influential metalcore bands of the 2000’s, and rightfully so, their previous albums have been essential to the genre. The first two singles of Defy, “Unbreakable” and “Back to Me” were hopeful, Aaron Pauley’s screams were a solid replacement for Austin’s, and the riffs were refreshing. Aside from surface level lyrics, which the band has always struggled with for the most part, I was excited for this album. “Warzone” and “Defy” however were boring. “Warzone” is a generic metalcore song, that really showcases nothing new or interesting, with an unfitting bridge. The same argument can be made for “Defy”. A high point on the album is the band’s Pink Floyd cover of “Money”. They put an interesting and new twist on this classic song that didn’t completely butcher it, which is what most metalcore bands do when they touch anything besides metal. “Sunflower” is another high point, with a solid riff, and good breakdown to accompany it. Breakdowns have always been OM&M’s strong suit, but now they’re underwhelming and just rehashing old tropes. “Forever YDG’n” embraces OM&M’s older songs, but without Austin Carlile’s screams, it just doesn’t sound right. Shayley Bourget’s absence also doesn’t fit, considering the band hasn’t made a YDG song since his departure. “Instincts” has an infectious intro riff that the rest of the album should have taken influence from. Of Mice & Men will never be the same without Austin Carlile, and I will continue to support them and listen to their music, but they don’t have the same quality they used to have. Defy wasn’t inherently bad- it was pretty ok for the most part, but as boring as things have ever been.

It starts off solid enough, but pretty much looses steam a few songs in. Their cover of 'Money' was a gem though.

Really not that bad but it has it's fair share of mediocre songs in here. Also whoever decided to put a cover 1/2 way through is fucking dumb

eh [2]

but to elaborate, it felt really generic to me. The production was no better than it is here, and the heavier cuts on this album felt way more interesting...this is like my second least favorite OM&M album too, so yeah.

Jamie's Elsewhere is such a depressing band. They went from a good album, to a fucking stellar one, to a mediocre one, and then that vocalist killed the band

@Kenbo: Idk, Forever YDG'n, despite not even lighting a candle to the original YDG tracks, really felt a lot less generic to me.

I was linked it, someone said I'd "fucking love it" and I ended up coming out like "eh... it's alright."
