0.0 | Arche | November 20th 16 | It's a shame Live in Despair... is produced in the way it is, as it's actually a very
interesting take on post-black metal in its composition. Combining the mournful atmospheres more
commonly associated with the Cascadian or even DSBM scenes, with a strangely carnival-esque
influence shouldn't work, but actually kinda does. In addition, the howling, reverb-soaked vocal
performance adds an unhinged element to its already unsettling feel, albeit occasionally sounding
a little too chintzy. The main issue, as aforementioned, is the production - the clearly
computerised drums stick out like a sore thumb alongside the guitars (its woodpecker-like bass
drum in particular is quite painful), and one or two of the synths may work in a more traditional
dungeon synth setting, but not in dark cabaret. Regardless, this is a very intriguing listen once
you look over its pitfalls - https://esthetesinistre.bandcamp.com/
