3.5 great | Alabaster Jones | October 1st 16 | Jason Sharp, a little-known Canadian saxophonist, is certainly well versed when it comes to experimental music. His time spent as a focal member of the massive Montreal ensemble known as Land Of Kush gave him an intricate knowledge of musical eccentrics, and that is very much apparent on A Boat Upon Its Blood. The album, a mixture of free jazz, modern classical, and ambient electronic, is decidedly an exercise in contrasts. While a song like "A Blast At Best" can be unstructured and fluid in its looseness, a song like closer "Still I Sit, With You Inside Me, Part 2" can be wholly conventional, with an emphasis set on atmosphere rather than sheer musicianship. Some of these ideas are fleshed out very well, but the album at a couple of intervals falls prey to moments of boredom and relative stagnation. That said, it is very nice to see a musical mind once part of a larger collective branch out on its own and provide some very quality experimental music in the end.
