Throwing Things is one of the best album closers ever.

From the opening chords of "Skip Steps 1 & 3" to the closing, crashing drums and crunchy guitars at the end of "Throwing Things", you're hooked. It's just one incredibly catchy riff after another with punk rock fury, indie rock originality, and this driving force that just keeps you listening and tapping your toes along to the music. And clearly it's underrated on Sputnik, doesn't even have a full review yet! Such a pity for a cornerstone of indie rock as we know it.

My one and only mentor in life turned me onto Superchunk and I haven't looked back. This is Mac at his angry and creative best. There aren't any really bad tracks on their second album, but they all serve to provide buildup into their distortion masterpiece "Throwing Things." Plus, how many album names fit a love of Pocky into the title? Here's to you, Rick.

Despite not being as well known as some of the other alternative rock albums that were coming out at the time, Superchunk's No Pocky for Kitty is almost as good in some regards. It's full of classic riffs, and there are some great melodies, but it lacks those 1 or 2 songs that truly stand out from the rest. Cast Iron and Tower are my 2 favorites, but it's a matter of tastes, and they also lacked the major label machine to help promote any singles. This is an improvement from their debut, and the feedback drenched guitars, plus Mac McCaughan's vocals sound clearer and more focused this time around. There is a strong stoner vibe going on here, and that does cause some of the songs to drag towards the end, but if you like loud, fuzzed out guitars, puzzling lyrics, and impassioned vocals, this shouldn't disappoint.
