Review Summary: young ugly god toss yo booty like a salad!
There really is no conventional way to begin a discussion about Ugly God. The kid blew up from dumbass Twitter memes and Vines of him putting a lizard on his nose yelling “GANG GANG” until he dropped his hit single “Water” and then he somehow managed to make it on the cover of XXL in the Freshmen Class of 2017. This was all before he
actually dropped a full length project. Yeah sure, it’s probably fucking stupid, but it’s also a feat to be accomplished, no matter how much of an imbecile he can be. I would say it’s a bit justified though. Ugly God definitely has talent, whether it be conveyed through his comedic chops, or his nonchalant delivery, or how he markets himself. He is probably the stupidest rapper in the game currently, but you can’t help but love him to death for it. With
The Booty Tape, Ugly God manages to spit bars with some of the most braindead punchlines in hip hop today, but with his decently established flow, it ends up being great music to halve your IQ with for 20 minutes or so.
Seriously though, if you want to enjoy this project, you can’t take it seriously whatsoever. That’s not the point of the record. This isn’t another political hip hop record trying to change the world; this is Ugly God trying to stunt and tell everybody how much he wants to eat ass. Which honestly, after so many watered-down political attempts this year *cough*
Everybody *cough*, is so much more refreshing than it seems. The lyrical contributions Ugly God make on this thing, with dumbass lines about striking your bitch in Hobby Lobby or repping Lil Dick Clique, are actually pretty damn creative for the most part. Albeit, they’re absolutely moronic in every sense of the word, but like I said earlier,
The Booty Tape isn’t meant to be taken seriously whatsoever -- if you couldn’t tell by the title. I mean, certain verses and lines had me laughing my ass off, feeling like some 12 year old kid on Xbox Live with bars like
”I made yo bitch say ‘uh’ I put my hand on her butt. She said, ‘boy I'm on my period.’ I said, ‘I don't give no fuck!’ These bars are just so fucking stupid you can’t help but at least giggle a little bit. That’s not necessarily all the record has to offer though; Ugly God actually has some really well done and thought out self produced tracks on here, like “I’m A Nasty Hoe,” “LDC,” and the aforementioned “Water”. These beats provide a crisp and fitting take on modern trap that Ugly God can actually rap over, which makes this tape infinitely more refreshing than some of the other debut tapes we’ve seen this year, like
Playboi Carti or
SupaJefe from XXL Freshmen counterparts Carti and Kap G, respectively. Overall, this record plays like one of the most entertaining and amusing rap projects out of 2017 for sure, and if you’re willing to dumb down any sense of musical pretentiousness for a minute, I’m almost positive you will walk away having enjoyed yourself, even if you’re laughing
at Ugly God, and not
with Ugly God the entire time.
