Review Summary: You're Dead! Let's Disco *moshing*
One Morning Left are a band. A band from the Land of Fin. They play a style of music that my Parents would call ‘Absolute Dog***’. But to me they play a style which incorporates two things I find pleasure in. Metal and Disco.
With an album title like ‘Metalcore Superstars’ and song titles such as ‘Fast and Furious 6.66’ and ‘Heavy Metal Finland!” you would assume that you are stepping into an almost Attack! Attack! style of band, and you just might be - But truth be told, One Morning Left are more than just a gimmicky band, there is some serious talent behind the over-the-top showmanship and ridiculous song titles.
‘You’re Dead! Let’s Dance’ is the epitome of what this band will offer. Auto Tuned clean vocals, mixed with grueling lows and highs, gang-vocals, breakdowns, and disco/trance beats. This is the formula that One Morning Left don’t stray from, and they don’t need to. Their musicianship and ability to jump in and out of genres works well. A big part of this is due to a tight rhythm section and some nice synth work from Keyboardist Touko, the intro riff to ‘Heavy Metal Finland’ is catchy as hell. ‘Devils Nest’ includes a not out of place guitar solo that works nicely and applies the cheese nicely.
Both vocalists are better than you would expect. Whilst Auto-Tune is used with abundance by Leevi’s clean vocals throughout, ‘Kings and Queens’ lets his actual voice shine through and in ‘Heavy Metal Finland’ his vocals sound great in the chorus and nowhere near as nasally as one would assume with this style of music. Mika on the other hand is brutal in his deliveries. His screams go from low to high, shrieks to guttural yells and even some border line cleans in ‘Derailed’. It’s glorious and really matches the over-the-top nature of music they are playing.
‘Metalcore Superstars’ is not as diverse as the band would like you to think. Whilst yes, they do incorporate a vast range of styles it has been done before and has been done better – I See Stars ‘New Demons’ being a personal fav of mine, but ‘Metalcore Superstars’ is right near the top of the pile and really does not outstay its welcome, which is weird for music that not only my parents, but most people would call ‘Absolute Dog***’.
