4.0 excellent | bungiewolf | August 11th 15 | Parlour Tricks sound is a mixture of synth-indie and 60's pop. They groove with catchy riffs and funky drums, but can also contemplate with slower melodies. The instrumentation leans towards synth, but is pretty balanced between the vocals, bass, guitar, and drums. Lily Cato's vocals are dreamy and reminiscent of the sixties, which makes each song stick in the listener's head. The content of most of the album is centered on romance. This is not bad, as each song has somewhat of a purer feel towards romance. Still, the true pains of scorned or sour love do not completely come through on some songs. The overall emotional impact of the album suffers because of this, but on a whole the album is a nice balance between catchy and deep, melancholy and joy. There is much room to grow for the Parlour Tricks, and Broken Hearts/Bones is a great foundation upon which to continue to build their sound.
