Review Summary: all the ways I feel like a man, I am still just a boy

You'd be hard pressed to find another release in 2015 that’s as downright quirky and entertaining as You, Me, and Everyone We Know’s newest EP, Dogged. Rather than letting his struggles with alcoholism and anxiety weigh him down in the gutter, Ben Liebsch has morphed his conflicts into witty lyrics and highly animated melodies on the band’s latest affair. He’s always had a knack for crafting manic tunes in a similar vein as Say Anything, but this time around he’s knocked the ball clear out of the stadium. Songs like ‘I’d Rather Be Sleeping’ and ‘Does it Amaze Thee’ come to life with enormous choruses and lines that are bound to earn a chuckle or two. However, it’s when Liebsch uses a bit of restraint that he’s able to surpass all of his past efforts. ‘A Pleasant Bummer’ showcases his lyrical talent, as he spills out the vocal performance of his career behind nothing but an acoustic guitar. He stores up all his angst for the song’s final moments, finishing off the EP with one hell of a bite. Even at the ripe age of 30, Liebsch admits to being unsure about life, yet there’s something about his sarcastic delivery that suggests he’s simply poking fun at himself and making the best of a ***ty situation. After all, who says self deprecation can’t be fun?

never tried a one paragraph review, feedback welcome. If you like Say Anything, you'll probably enjoy this. probably my favorite release from them thus far, it's just a blast

i do have a soft spot for SA so I'll give these guys a fair shot just cuz. nice little write-up too. idk if I'm liking the influx of 1-para reviews lately, but i can't deny i like the quick read.

thanks man. yeah i'm not too surprised you didn't know they still existed, they've released nothing but EP's other than that one LP and the singer almost lost his life to his addictions. Glad they're able to make such a nice comeback though. 4.5 might seem kinda high but i really like all 6 of these tracks : ]

These guys rule, and the Say Anything comparison is exactly right. I really enjoyed Some Things Don't Wash Out.

Liked his/their previous EP, so will give this a listen. Thought briefly about reviewing it, but thought "Nah, Atari will do it". That's 2 in a row now. haha.

Shorter reviews are a nice change of pace, but personally I wouldn't write all my reviews like this. They're nice but inevitably lack the depth and detail of a normal length write up.

For example, my Tallest Man on Earth review was just a few musings but not the typical effort I'd want to regularly put forth.

A "weird coincidence" or a strategically placed camera? Hmmm.

In this case, the shorter review works. For starters, it's an EP. More importantly, you pack a fair bit of info into it. BUT I'm familiar with Liebsch's work, so that helps. Usually, if I want to know more about the sound of an artist, I'd want that extra depth & detail that Sowing mentioned. But yeah, it's a nice change of pace that works well in this instance, so well done.

lmao

thanks for the feedback Davey and Sowing! I'm not planning on making a habit of the 1-paragraph review format, but I'm glad this one turned out okay.

@Calc, yeah the similarities to this and say anything are pretty apparent. i think you'd dig

Ben's a great guy and this new EP is great. If it sounds like any of YM&EWK stuff, it's the full-length, but it's definitely fresh and new and terrific!

Glad u enjoyed the review Mark, cheers.! I think u might dig this one

And yeah calc there's definitely some songs on their full length that are similar to this, but overall I think ben sounds more reinvigorated on this one. This is my favorite by them at this point but all their other EPs are pretty great too
