Review Summary: You May Not Return.

Dissociation. There is nothing behind the eyes of the dead. Yet, here you are. Living, breathing––everything but feeling. The reality in front of your eyes, is nothing more than a film lacking a plot. You are merely a semi-sentient camera recording the dissonance. It is difficult, if not impossible, to tell whether the few scenes in which you are the protagonist is the illusion: or is the illusion that debilitating sensation that you are nothing more than a camera with a smudged lens? An unsettling epiphany in the back of your mind whispers like a demon demanding attention. This is what those whispers say: "It doesn't matter whether you switch between being the protagonist or being the camera, this is all a play anyhow." The demon laughs manically. You would cry, but you have been a camera for so long you have forgotten how.

If you have struggled with depression. If you have felt the sensation of being an inanimate object that is merely recording the events that are occurring before you, then this album is a lamentation that has fermented in that void until it ripened into a cancer. Music can be cathartic, especially music that is targeted to these emotions. However, it can also be dangerous. Especially if you are in the aforementioned state as the listener. I have struggled with depression, but I found this album when I was in a place where I could finally realize, I am more than a smudged camera lens. I don't know if this album would help you break away from those emotions. If you are feeling this way and love this music, you may be thinking that its because you have befriended your dread and this marriage cannot be annulled. That isn't true. You can leave that place. You can be stronger without it. So, if you are listening to this album and slipping deeper into that void–the void that separates whatever identity you once had from the self–please know that you can make your way back. However, the answer isn't in this album.

It may sound like I have a disdain for this album and that would be a partially fair assessment. When I listen to this album, it reminds me of that 'thing' I became. A cask of flesh that was void of all sentient capacity. Wrest knows that feeling. He has let those emotions brew record after record. Lurker of Chalice is the precipice. Lurker of Chalice is the culmination. Great art invokes sentiment, good art replicates it. This is great art. However, it may not be great for you depending upon where you are mentally. I am in a place where I can revisit that place with new eyes–a new lens. This album enables me to remain sympathetic to others as well as myself. This music is a portal to a dimension where many have wandered and few have returned from. Do not view it as a challenge, but an opportunity for self-evaluation. An opportunity for self-realization.

I have been a long-time lurker. I found this site when I was 15 and I am 27 now. I'm open to all forms of criticism. The mean ones are usually pretty funny. I hope that those of you who have taken the time to read it enjoy it.

Hey Love, good meeting ya, good lucks, hope to see you round the parts!

Pos o' course, nice review, and clearly coming from a place of deep feeling. I'm a sucker for experiential reviews that really only tertiarilly tie in to the music itself, although would say if you're going to bring up the music at all, to go a little more in depth with the actual experience of listening to it (even if you want to keep it abstract, without the black metal rawr rawr m/ descriptors), and maybe slim the analogous comparisons down so they more consistently tie in to the semi-sentient camera imagery.

Nice work on the bookending sentences setting up and resolving very simply, to plain state what you're working with more cerebrally at other places. Cheers, amoré, thanks for sharing

Nice little review, boy does that intro para paint a picture

I'd maybe like to hear a bit more about how this album in particular illustrates the themes you're talking about, totally cool to not go for in-depth analysis but maybe a passing mention of what sort of music this is wouldn't hurt? Just a thought, still gonna give this'n a big fat POS

Always good to see new writers emerge. This is a solid first review; my only advice would be to work in more about the music, but it's clearly meant to be something of a personal/cathartic piece so in that sense it still kind of works. Have never listened to this album but your description here makes me curious.

Thank you all for the kind words. Definitely could have worked in more about the music itself, but as all of you have noticed I did attempt to make it more about the emotional impact of the album but that didn't translate as well as I would have liked. Hopefully I can improve upon that in my next submission. Cheers.

You're getting a hell of a lot more out of this album than I did, that's for sure.

I do love me some Leviathan, but this formula just doesn't quite cut it. At least not for me.

That summary, however, is spot on.
