Review Summary: Charming Liars are every bit as likeable as their name would suggest and their new EP is a lot of fun.

Charming Liars have all the ingredients to hit the big time. They're a British/American rock band that has toured with the likes of Daughtry and Sick Puppies. They possess a youthful energy full of excitement and lyrics that usually fall on the side of the glass half full. While their new EP is anything but revolutionary, it's undeniably charming.

The five songs that make up the 'We Won't Give Up' EP are fast paced and masterfully crafted pop rock songs. Each one moves along at a break neck speed with expertly executed hooks. The opening song 'The Desperation' will have your foot tapping within the first 10 seconds. It's about growing up in a modern world where things make very little sense and the only thing that will keep people from perishing is the ability to stay hopeful. Lyrically it's pretty standard but the groovy guitar melody and excellent vocals make it a standout track. The lead singer Charlie Cosser has that classic English pop punk voice that helps each song hit the ground running. His versatile vocal abilities keep each song sounding fresh even when the band is clearly sticking to a safe formula throughout. An addiction themed song like 'Wasted' sounds run of the mill on paper but Charming Liars are able to elevate things with their spirited cohesiveness as a band. Lyrics in general are only as effective as the band performing them and Charming Liars prove that theory on 'We Won't Give Up'.

The hopeful mindset behind their lyrics sets them apart from some other bands in the same wheelhouse. While many of the Charming Liar's songs talk about negative experiences, they always offer a rainbow at the end of the journey or at least the possibility of one. Each song jumps around with a winning excitement and never veers off into long instrumental sections. That works well here but if the band attempts a full length record, I wonder will they be able to maintain that giddiness on an eleven track album ? It would be nice to see the rest of the band get their time to shine and maybe take a risk or two. It's clear they aren't attempting to reinvent the wheel with their musical style but they definitely have a distinct personalty that will help them retain some longevity and a healthy fan base.
