Review Summary: Progressive-alternative is only a light term.
Dead letter circus is one mystery of a band. The first encounter with this band during listens of
This is a warning made questions instantly come up.
"How the hell is this as good as it is?" and
"Is there anything to even describe this?"
Going back to look into any possible previous material,
Dead Letter Circus Came into my hands. If was different, but the same time, telling how this was a blueprint to their debut was easy.
The six song EP spans a little over 24 minutes. What was most appealing is the songs and length feel exactly right. The order seems a little scattered. Listening to this EP was like a Upper/Downer experience. Starting with
The Mile, which has steady rhythm and a fast pace, it gets the hype going. Following that is
Lines, Which honestly slowed down the pace a bit.
Disconnect and Apply Picks the pace back up, and then
Are we closer goes back to slow, then picks up mid song again. If this a terrible thing? Absolutely not. The way the EP is structured could have be slightly better. However the songs are well worth the listen.
Every song on here was well produced. The Upper/Downer feel to it had the negative to the structure, but a positive toward diversity.
" Progressive-alternative" is only a light term to describe the overall feel and sound of the EP. The sound balance between the instruments and vocals is very impressive considering this is an earlier release. The guitar hooks and bass lines compliment each other very well, as do the drums.
Alien, The over six minute ending track to the EP, is a great example of great balancing and the way Dead Letter Circus structures their individual songs.
Lines is a very slow but complex song that showcases a great example of vocal range and tone.
The Mile and
Disconnect and Apply Are the fast paced songs of the albums. To be honest, while they have a different feel in speed and tone, at the same time it fits well with the rest of the songs. The lead singer's vocals are high, and i mean HIGH. Some people may find this annoying. After a few listens however, the high vocals really work here.
People Could say Dead letter circus sounds like this band mixed with this band and maybe a little mix of that band. I don't really care. They have a pretty unique sound that is still exciting. After hearing this EP, i understand how they continue to expand on their sound in positive ways. Dead letter circus is a band that possibly has a bright future in making great music. Being excited for what they put out next is just an understatement.
