Review Summary: Probably one of the greatest black metal albums of the decade, and it's a demo!?!? Ruumisvaunut is one of those black metal bands you’d be lucky enough to hear about. The one man band started in 2006 after the sole member Gommorrah left the Chris Barnes death metal outfit Torture Killer. The band’s demo, Kuollut (Finnish for ‘dead’), is a quick burst of refreshing, honest, technical, unique black metal. Rereleased on XFactor Records in early 2007 with the track Hiiden Hauta as a bonus, the disc is easily the most underground trademark black metal release of this decade.
The first track, Mina Rutto, bursts into heavy blast beats, pummeling bass, screeching vocals, and ripping guitars that are melodic enough yet heavy enough to be called real black metal. The song keeps a strong, heavy atmosphere until halfway where it slows to a more blackened doom metal style. The vocals are very coarse and incoherent, but give the music a scary vibe that is simply orgasmic to hear. Kuollot, the album titled track, starts with a more death metal style guitar groove, but quickly goes into a smooth black metal riffage. The song is a lot more straightforward then the previous track. The big difference is the presence of Mercyful Fate meets Ihsahn style clean vocals near the end of the song, giving it a very dense, black metal Nevermore feel... almost. The track has great atmosphere is yet another great example of beautiful black metal chaos.
Saarnamies Vainaa has a more industrial sound to it, with a much more crusty feel to it’s atmospheric tone. The song is pretty much thrashy black metal for most of the musical part until the song goes into a slower, doom-esque feel musically near the end. The vocals on the track are also some of the scariest on the album. The production of Hiiden Hauta is a tad better then the previous tracks due to it be a bonus on the label’s reissue, but it also takes away some of the grim vibe to the music. The song has a much more catchy groove to it and brings back early Emperor to mind with it’s symphonic undertone.
Overall, the demo is a solid classic for excellent black metal music that never bores nor fails to impress, and is essential for anyone who loves the classic, raw black metal sound that also isn’t afraid of originality or experimentation. 5/5

| | | It's short review, but a short CD too, so it's fine. Good review, too. I'm interested in getting this now.

You can get it free here tonight!
| | | The distortion of the vocals make this hard to see as a 5, but I'm not a fan of black metal and I still kind of like it. It's pretty awesome that it's a one-man band.
This looks more like a 3.5 than a 5, especially since it all seems a little too much for this one guy to pull off and starts to sound overloaded by the third track. Mina Rutto is fucking kickass though.
/and as for the review, you've done much better. Maybe it's because you've been out of it for a while, but I'm going to blame the short track list and the fact that you have to prove it's a classic while it's only four tracks. Still, a good review, and glad to see you going at it again. This Message Edited On 04.01.07
| | | Man, their profile has 40 friends, 7 comments, and 197 views. How the hell did you find these guys?
I'm on their first song, and I love the shrieking vocals.

Only black metallers like myself could appreciate the vocal distortion. I think it gives
the music a great, scary atmosphere. But you not being a black metal fan and still
linking this says something. :]
I found them through metal-archives.com, which has been down recently, when I was
searching Torture Killer out of boredom. This Message Edited On 04.01.07
| | | Your writing is good but the review didn't really tell me much.

It was really hard to say alot since this band is so underground. And there wasn't enough to elaborate on the songs.

Ihsahn's clean vocals are just as shitty King Diamond impersonation, so this is kind of irrelevant.
Seems kind of like a lot of hyperbole here. I don't doubt that it's good, but a 5? You really have to relax with the 5s.
Nonetheless, it was decent all things considered, and I'll look into this.
You can't seriously say they're "too underground" though, seriously. That's a lame excuse. This Message Edited On 04.01.07

Lay off.
| | | I mean the fact that you go so far as to say
Probably one of the greatest black metal albums of the decade, and it's a demo!?!?
I'm skeptical. No "classic" is that unknown, even in the BM scene. Especially one that features members from an already established band.
| | | I really think they should change the 5 description from 'Classic' to 'Perfect' or something. I mean, obviously this CD isn't going to be a classic as they are not known at all, but that in no way means it doesn't deserve a 5. The same goes for tons of albums on here that I feel weird about giving 5's.
| | | Album Rating: 4.5
Well, for me, I don't call it classic when I give it a five, I call it "pretty f*cking good
album". And this band is a bit more widely known then the myspace suggests.
THANK YOU HARDHAT! You're my new best friend. This Message Edited On 04.01.07

I really think they should change the 5 description from 'Classic' to 'Perfect' or something.
But then we can never give any album a 5. Classic is more flexible than perfect, and while I don't agree with many people's arguments on what makes an album a "classic," calling an album "perfect" would cause more room for debate. Perfect would imply that every single song is good, no matter what, and we can't honestly say that a lot of the fives found on Sputnik are like that.
| | | That's true. No matter what the decription is, I'll probably always second guess myself when giving an album a 5, which is probably good.
| | | Album Rating: 4.5
Well, perfect can also be a very lose term. For me, this CD gets a 5 for being near perfect TO ME. Other opinions may vary.
| | | Still, it all comes to objectivity. You should be a little more sparse with your fives, sure, because you have to remember that fours and 4.5s aren't bad ratings at all. Fours can be taken as classics of a set genre, while 4.5s just take it a step further. You seem all too willing to bow down to an album because you think it's totally awesome.
| | | Album Rating: 4.5
Well, I am also deleting a lot of the 5's cause they were made back when I was an ignorant n00b and I never got around to change them.
| | | Hmmh... I mean, I'm still only a n00b basically, but I give an album I think is totally awesome a 4.5 and the extra 0.5 points that would make it a 5 are for the "historical significance" that gives an album "classic status". Or if I really like it so fucking much that it deserves a 5 anyway. But that happens extremely rarely.
