Review Summary: With his first release on Dubzilla Recordings, Nomine offered up four tracks of densely layered, tropical and eastern flavored, sub heavy dubstep, and with his second release gives us a deeper look into Nomine’s sound. Two weeks ago when Rinse FM dropped the news that the next 12” release on Tempa, one of dubstep’s figurehead labels, would be two tracks by Nomine most people were left saying “Nomi-who???”. The mysterious producer only made his debut release in July of last year, but his tracks have already gained support from Youngsta, J:Kenzo, and Plastician, who included the track “Waves” in his Dubstep Allstars Vol. 10 mix. With his first release on Dubzilla Recordings, Nomine offered up four tracks of densely layered, tropical and eastern flavored, sub heavy dubstep, and with his second release gives us a deeper look into Nomine’s sound.
The A side is titled “Nomine’s Sound” and one can look upon this track as almost a mission statement of his sound. The intro starts off with some reverb drenched string samples, a subdued vocal sample, and delayed cymbal hits to present a large and dark atmosphere. As the last note of the strings linger the rest of the tracks elements come in. The wobbling sub slides in and out underneath the kick drum centered beat with the hi-hats and bongo hits bringing the tracks groove. The placement of the tracks atmospheric elements is superb, the vocal samples are used in a minimal and very tasteful manor, and the strings fading in and out of the track with an evolving melody line that allows the track to morph as it continues along.
The release’s B-side showcases Nomine’s skill for creating a groove that locks the listener in. “Searching” begins with a looped two note drone soon to be accompanied by a growing bell like melody and samples of a wooden flute, until a robotic sounding voice comes in repeating the word “searching” in between a midrange snarl. As the track drops all its elements come together pulling the listener into it’s pulsing groove. The sliding sub line is immense, and backed with some extra punch from the well placed kicks, this combo is the driving force behind the impeccable groove. The percussion adds to the atmosphere greatly, with the reverbed metal hits, bongos, and swelling hi-hat bringing the groove deeper until they begin to drop out and a creepy synth line fades in alongside the sub line bringing the track to it’s middle section. As the bass drops out an airy synth comes in and the sounds of wooden and metal wind chimes create a calming mood until the voice comes back and states “searching” one more time before the tracks uneasy groove drops upon you once again. The atmospheric elements and melodies fade in and out of each other while the drums slowly fall out bit by bit until they stop and the airy synth and wind chimes fade the track out.
Nomine builds tunes with a groove strong enough to keep you locked in and knows how to use atmosphere to his advantage, placing swells and melodies at the perfect moment. The most signature element of his sound is the amazing sub bass lines, morphing like a liquid monster underneath the deep atmosphere he crafts. It’s amazing for an artist who only has two releases under his name to have a sound this developed, and it’s no wonder why some of the biggest names in dubstep have been supporting his music.

Hey mods, you changed the album title it is supposed to be "Nomine's Sound", thats the name on the official release. Anywho, my first review in sosososo long so go easy on me. If you dig dubstep with deeper darker flavor this release is a must

People always say this and i think it's time to explain. This scene of dubstep, and a lot of UK bass music actually, is really focused on vinyl. The main reason for this is the DJ aspect of the scene, nothing sounds better than a fat slab of wax through an epic system. The artwork for these releases is almost always a circle because they don't come in a full cardboard record sleeve with artwork, you get the record in a paper sleeve and the only artwork is on the sticker in the center of the record, which is a circle

Echoing what Jash said. That's actually one of the reasons I love buying vinyl from Critical because not only is their DnB top-notch but it does in fact come in a full sleeve.

Yeah there's a couple labels that do the full sleeve thing, Crunch Records does is as well but with a hole in the center for the label artwork as well it's pretty nifty

He covered for Youngsta on last weeks Minimal Mondays and he smashed it, honestly one of the best mixes I have ever heard, ever! He displays a very unique sound throughout the entire mix, using a lot of his own work as well a quite a few unknown tracks. Near the end he plays out this long sample of a man talking about sound which is super cool and then switches it up to 130bpm and plays some awesome tracks to close it out. At the very end he plays a little part of a super dubbed out 140 tune, which im assuming is one of his tracks, and it's sooooo good. He's got some good mixing skills too
