Review Summary: Dread inducing suffocation.
Primitive man, who could be more violent? More selfish, cruel or sadistic? Undoubtedly the members of the three piece collective from Colorado would agree with my rhetoric, and have set out to show you, to immerse you, with the cold truth of our history. How might they do this? Well they might just make an album called "Scorn".
Primitive Man keep things relatively slow paced, but don't mistake slowness for sleep inducing because this music most certainly is not, opener "Scorn" will acclimatise you to their sound right off the bat, with crushing doom riffs, dissonant melodies, and the perfect use of noise. Primitive Man's music achieves truly heavy weight, and if the vocal delivery towards the end of the track hasn't got you convinced, then thats your cue to leave, but if you choose to stick around, prepare for the misanthropy because Primitive man are just getting started, and they will suffocate you into submission. You may be thinking Eyehategod while listening to this album and you'd be right, but keep going, you will see this bands sound is to a large extent, their own.
"Antietam" is the best track on the album, the heaviness is more apparent here by a slight notch more, as is the tempo, which is higher in the beginning before being bought back down to their usual progression, the bands instrumentation is for the lack of a better word, superb, every instrument contributes perfectly to the bands untechnical, and at many times crushingly atmospheric sound.
The words noisy, sludgy, suffocating, and atmospheric are all equally applicable to the band's immersive walls of sound. This bands debut succeeds in punishing you, and indeed, if Primitive Man can't make you see the harsh side of humanity with this album then its possible you might live a life slightly unexamined, or its just not to your taste, which is understandable because this band tastes filthy.
