Review Summary: The Rolling Stones + The Gun Club + Steve Earle= Here Come The Snakes.
Have you ever wondered what the Rolling Stones wouldve came up with if they had sought to recapture the sound of thier classic LP's while nursing an indie-punk rock obsession? Probobly not, but if they did it is more then likely it would turn out a lot like this album. Green On Red have always been the kind to reimagine the sounds of classic-rock in a hip, sneering fashion. But not until this album have they recreated the sweetest aspects of thier country influences in such an equally relevant (for the time) and vicarious fashion.
Opening up with the snide and clever "Keith Cant Read", the band kicks right into a flurry of Richards-esque riffage and sleazy vocals. Immediately following is the new-wave mocking "Rock N Roll Disease", complete with mtv-era jabbing lyrics. The tone softens up and gets more emotional with the barroom-country jam, "Morning Blue", where Stuart talks about his depression. Beautiful song. Next up is the bluesy "Zombie For Love", a groovy, humurous track which is my personal favorite off of the album. The Country-Blues aesthetic continues up until the last track, where it shifts into ballad mode on "We Had It All", trading in the tounge-in-cheek lyrical style of former mention for an almost-cheesy crack at a serious love song. The song is brief and understandable in its placement on the track listing. There is no apparant filler besides perhaps the previously mentioned closer, so this makes for a great album and a highlight in the GOR discography.
If youre a fan of 80's indie rock and punk blues with a country feel, I would recommend this album for you to check out. Also if you ever wanted to check out this band, here would be a good place to start.
