France basically pioneered screamo with bands such as Ivich, Jasemine, and Petit Printemps being some of the first bands to combine elements of hardcore punk with elements of emo. Anomie were one of the most crucial bands as far as progressing the style, and bringing it a big step closer to what it sounds like now. This album was originally released in 1997, and still remains one of the most criminally under-appreciated in the genre.
