I know it sounds stupid, but since I don't know a shit about "technical" musical things

What is exactly a riff?, I thought it was chords that repeated, but in that case, the chords of songs

like Sweet Home Alabama would count as a "riff" while most people say that's not the case

Sweet Home Alabama riffs pretty hard. It's just a shit song. Riffs aren't always all that matters.

I usually consider a riff to be a distorted guitar line that isn't a lead guitar lick

Nono, I know (Sweet Home Alabama rules) but then, the definition of riff, is just "chords that repeat", right?

Yeah, i mean, pretty much. It's pretty straight forward. People try to muddle it. Normally the more distinguished it is, the more people label it as a "riff", so it can quickly delve into that somewhat undefinable territory.

Its just a repeated chord progression

Chords or a cluster of notes that repeat, paraphrasing from a google search

If what google says it's true, then "riff" is a very broad term

Ehhh not really

Riff is something that repeats and a lick is something that doesn't, makes sense to me that way anyway

Ye, it is. People tend to use it here to describe technicality mostly for but not limited to metalzz.

Its one of those things where you know a riff when you hear it but its hard to actually describe to someone what it technically is
