Genghis Tron aren't like other normal grindcore bands. One moment they can assault your ears with the most dissonant and harsh sounds your ears can handle and then all of a sudden the tempo drops and you hear this cheesy disco-type music. Seem appealing? Maybe yes and maybe not. The fact of the matter is Dead Mountain Mouth is a solid experimental record infused with some weird electronica to keep things interesting. Of course, I didn't know what to expect from when I looked this band up but I'm glad I did. This is really enjoyable even if you aren't such a grind fan (as it obviously isn't straight up grind, this actually has proper melody).

The vocals are very harsh which makes it sound painful to make but it always feels very Converge-like disagree or not. The guitars probably don't play as much of a role in the album than in most grind but mostly cause it's a lot more keyboard based. The guitars are rather sweet. Whether they are getting the crap bashed out them or they are playing some uber-cool hardcore lick. The drums are shadowed by the amount of samples on the album but it's still got some extremely good beats. It's either the drums are playing a complicated drum part consisted of aggressive double bass or they opt for the typical grind blast beat. Either of them make me happy none the less. The album consists of two styles throughout - the typical grind sound with a twist of electronica goodness or just samples upon samples.

To the casual listener the samples could just tick a man off but there is a catch. When a listener listens to this for the first time it'll be hard to figure what track is which. It's basically cause most of the tracks follow onto each other like a story. Listen to this the whole way through cause this is basically how this album need to be experienced. Another good thing about Genghis Tron is their way of being quite unique. There probably isn't another band who sounds very similar to them except from the idea of Horse The Band using cheesy samples. But Genghis Tron use the samples in a more progressive, serious state. After all this praise contained in these words, is there actually anything wrong with the album? Yes there is in fact. While the samples and electronic beats were a very nice touch, they were very overused. A lot of the songs duration is just crunched up by the continuous samples. It's not really anything to seriously get on one's nerves but it's just a matter of opinion.

If the listener hasn't listened to anything mildly heavy then this could be slightly hard to get into. The Folding Road (the opener) probably has one of the heaviest parts of the album. All coming in before the first minute of the album. Chapels contains some nice sparingly used electronic parts but still contains an ear-bursting assault. The self-titled track contains this quite catchy, melodic guitar part which makes one think, "this is what I'm listening for!" In truth all the songs are great (and easy to get some enjoyment out of) and it's overall a rather solid album to sink a person's teeth into. Fans of screamo (yes), electronica, grind (obviously) or hardcore will get something out of this.

the usual:
learn when and how to use periods
learn when and how to use commas
learn how not to construct sentences that aren't awkward
learn how to make your reviews interesting. Why is everyone so sheepish when it comes to criticizing? Are Eliminator and I the only two people who notice how mediocre this guy writes?

Basically, this band is amazing. Im hoping to get this album and Cloak of Love for Christmas.
Good review, aside from a few grammer mistakes.

I'm gonna have to agree with pulseczar on this one. Your review has plenty of detail but it was also very difficult to read. Commas were inserted in places were they shouldn't have been and your sentences show little fluency. I think you should read over this one and spend a little more time it, the detail was fine but it was a bit hard to get through. This Message Edited On 11.07.06

Eliminator lol.

Oh yeah, I wrote this for RYM without anything to help me =/

And Pulseczar, I understand what you're saying but you don't have to be so critical of me all the time

Pulse, you should really give the guy a break. He's 16 years old and the main problems in his writing are grammar and vocabulary, that's hardly suprising is it? Derek puts a lot of effort into his reviewing, and sure they might have some errors, but he's gonna learn that in time. Maybe if you gave him some constructive points on how to improve the things you stated, he'd be able to work on them.

Wow Neoteric, I always pictured you as being much older. Youre my age :D
I can always tell that you really try on your reviews. And I always enjoy them, I just think your grammer is a bit lacking at times.

Everyone I meet online say they always think I'm 16 or something along those lines.

And grammar has never been my best point but it's not if my grammar is so bad that it's impossible to read.

Well yeah, I had checked on your myspace and it said 16 But yeah, that only goes to emphasize my point. Your reviews are great for your age.

/probably sounds really patronising. This Message Edited On 12.02.06

Excuse me but i have been an avid Genghis Tron fan for a ew years now. I have been to a couple of shows that i have been able to, and the writer of this review, at his age, has no real grasp of context inside this music. I agree with most of what he is saying, and if you wish to complain about grammar then please, jog on. What is missing is the ordascity and energy this band has. Its more about expressing energy and power, and minipulating this with more functional melodic tones. Giving a pleasant listen. Now please go blab on about how this album is pathetic, or amazing, but you have no grasp of "grindcore" and what it is about. This album is venturing so far into grind, pushing boundaries, seeing what can be reached and how it is taken by a viewing public. You will all probably grow up and move on and within a year this "grind" will be nothing but a racket to your melodic indie shite. If you are an avid grind fan, and aren't just in it because its "scene" or "cool" then you will realise the brutality and sheer magnifisence of this album.
