Oh my lord, "Opus 40" and "Goddess on a Hiway" are absolutely amazing. Rest of it might grow on me but nothing quite reaches the highs of those two songs.

Sorry Row, I can dig some camp but I remember a lot of this album being too much even for me. That childlike voice, that fairytale-esque instrumental backing, it's all so... cutesy. At times I felt like I was listening to the aural equivalent of Teletubbies or Care Bears, and the interludes (chiefly "The Drunk Room") only added outright aggravation.
I do owe this another chance though, it's been a couple months since my last few rounds of trying to get into this. Who knows, maybe the time off from it will help it grow? What I will say for now is that "The Funny Bird" and "Goddess on a Hiway" are both strong, the former standing up to anything on Yerself Is Steam.

it's just so damn pretty although I agree they were better with the old singer (Boces is their best album imo)
this is just super strong pop and nothing more
I'm guessing with your assessment of this you wouldn't be a huge Flaming Lips fan either??

I've only heard two Flaming Lips songs and I actually prefer them to most of what's on here: "She Don't Use Jelly" (not too huge on the vox but it's a charming tune overall) and "SpongeBob & Patrick Confront the Psychic Wall of Energy" (major SpongeBob SquarePants Movie nostalgia, love it).
I actually haven't heard Boces, just this and Yerself (which is a 4.7 for me). Been meaning to check it for a while, actually.

She Don't Use Jelly is a fucking classic, you should give Yoshimi and the Soft Bulletin a go sometime though, both some of the best albums of their decades for me
Boces is crazy, they throw fucking saxophones and flutes and all kinds of shit in there for no real reason, it's Yerself is Steam on (even more) acid

That sounds like it could either be dangerously cluttered, or be a 5 where Yerself falls just short. I'll definitely make sure to check it out, and I'll add Yoshimi and Bulletin to the list as well.

Goes so well with The Soft Bulletin:
Wayne Coyne: "... there were times when [The Flaming Lips] would go in [to the studio] right after [Mercury Rev], or they would come in right after us, and we were all exploring the same new gadgets together. They were starting to work in Protools at the same time we were. And whatever instruments, whatever new gadgets, between us, Mercury Rev and Dave [Fridmann] ... which ever band would get them, the next group into the studio would use them too. If Dave had just had some breakthrough moment he'd recorded with us, when Mercury Rev would come in he would say 'Hey ... we've got to do this, this is cool'. And the same thing would happen with us. So I think the connection is Dave Fridmann, and also this lack of really believing there would be an audience for this record. I think Mercury Rev felt the same way. Their audience had gone away, and all they could do was make the music that was in their dreams."
