not a fan of the hard panning on the vocals here that so many 60s albums do for some reason. it pretty much never sounds good

Didn't they originally intend it as a mono mix, and got told by the studio that they had to switch to stereo, so the panning elements were basically a zero budget rush job?

probably. I don't know why people thought you have to do that to the vocals though for it to be stereo. It's like when 3D movies became trendy so every movie had super unnecessary scenes added where there's an object flying into the foreground

Its better than most Beatles album, including Revolver, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hears and even the White Album. But even if i compare them to The Beatles, they certainly have their own sound and this album is proof, there's no miss on this album , and its just so fun to listen too4,3/5

feels like this album just exists as a vehicle for people’s hot takes about other bands from the 60s

I realize park copy-pasted that as satire but I unironically agree with that take.

This is a good album but I definitely overrated it—pretty uneven all told. Love the opener, “hung up,” “friends”. “Our year,” “butcher’s,” and closer good too. Everything else eh. Like it less than any Beatles album that isn’t LIB or, yknow, Yellow Submarine. Higher hit rate on those.

Agreed, this has truly brilliant highs but the "better than the beatles" thing I don't really understand as a whole. However I could probably understand it if you swapped a couple minor songs for stuff like Imagine the Swan and told me it was the original album, so there's that!
also Changes is endlessly good in its repetition

it's curious seeing people citing some of the more known albums from the 60's here and comparing them to the Beatles. As if they were the only good thing in terms of Psychedelic Pop / Rock that came from the decade, start digging people. The 60's are one of the most musically dense, diverse and rich decades out there.
