Sorry Mikes. I was planning this review out for a while. I try to be beat the crowd on new releases.

Me thinks this tops Imaginations easily, but I don't know about A Night at the Opera. They're probably about equal.

This was a good review, I really need to check this out. This must be the only true power-metal of all time.

How do you define "true" power metal?

Sung vocals, rather fast, plenty of solos, more upbeat and (dare I say) "poppy" than death metal or the ilk.

Ben, I shot The Scattering Of Ashes then when it comes out, provided Cocaine doesn't steal that one from me.

Surely, there is alot more than one "true" power metal album then. :p

I'll cover Falconer's new album (which is really sweet) and Hammerfall's new album (which doesn't come out for another month anyways).

Indeed there is, but new Blind Guardian is easily the most essential of all "modern" power metal albums.

You guys can take Into Eternity and Falconer as long as you leave the new Arsis and Cradle of Filth to me.

Ben, don't be surprised if I chime in with an Arsis review.

I assumed you would. People always seem to squeeze in reviews for things I've been planning on doing, and it's frustrating. That's why I've taken to submitting reviews as early as possible.

And FYI - I just spoke to Mike Van Dyne and he said everything is completely finished. Expect a news post from me with the new artwork and mp3 very soon.

I don't like to flag reviews as defaults unless one is obviously better than the other, so I'll probably let sputnik do its thing with that. I'm just about to submit a review for ACOG anyway. Arsis is my #3 favorite band and one review just isn't enough. This Message Edited On 09.07.06

Your review can be the default for sure, but I'd still like to do a review on it because I'm quite a big fan of that band. Plus, this site was meant for multiple reviews anyways.

Power metal isn't supposed to be aggressive.

True...

anyway, on another note, i'm sure i've seen this before, somewhere on the forums or something, but i cant seem to find it.

im pretty sure the vocals in power metal are falsettos, or the more oprea kinda vocals. well, maybe not all but most.

So how does Iron Maiden compare to power metal? Bruce has that high falsetto voice, the music is rather fast, plenty of solos, and its even poppy sometimes...

But i've heard people say Maiden is classic metal, not power metal...but i dont see alot of difference...

Maiden was the precursor to power metal. Bands took the twin guitar harmonies, high vocals, and riffing style and sped it up a bit and made it more "extreme".

Metal can be whatever the fuck it wants to be, I thought Children of Bodom was pretty fuckin aggressive when i first heard them.

You're right, metal can be whatever it wants to be. Aggression is obviously not what Blind Guardian chooses to be, and to rate the music low simply because of a lack of aggression would be to contradict an accurate observation that you yourself pointed out. Try to keep an open mind.

Ummm, my opinion is my opinion, and I don't even see why your making a big deal about it. It probably is good power metal and If i devoted time to listen to it I'm sure it is great, but the clean vocals just don't attract my current taste, sorry bro.

You're entitled to your opinion, and if clean vocals aren't your thing, that's fine. But your last comment made it seem like you don't like any non-aggressive music, and thoughts like that really bother me.

Well if it makes you feel better, I will say that this is excellent musicianship. I love all metal for that reason, but right now I prefer the technical aspects of Lamb of God, Behemoth, Dying Fetus, Deicide, that being the more heavier riffs, incredible drumming, aggresive vocals, etc. But I bet you can even agree that Metal is so broad and unique that you can't compare every band to each other. I use this site to learn about new groups and albums and decide what I should invest my money in, and then give my opinion on what I think, that's all.
