Haha cheers, nope I have one mate who's into classic hard rock like GNR and Motley Crue and stuff (meh) but I've managed to get him into some metal and I got him to come see Life of Agony with me which was rad, the rest of them have shocking taste and basically whatever is the pop flavour of the day, the only people in my school who say they like metal are either into BMTH and that kind of crap or can't go further than slipknot. At uni I'll join the rock/metal society, hopefully there'll be some cool people there

Yeah its tough none of my mates are much into rock/metal either, I've got a few into sigur ros/godspeed sort of thing but the minute they hear anything resembling a scream/growl they refuse to listen to it. Thats just utter close mindedness in my opinion but i've got to remind myself that not everyone appreciates the same music or music in general as much as I do and you guys too clearly.

Depends what you like. I like atmospheric stuff so I found Summoning and I was pretty sold on black metal after that.
For death metal the hardest thing to get used to is the vocals so start listening to bands that aren't necessarily death metal but have growls/extreme vocals like old Fear Factory, Meshuggah, old Gojira, Strapping Young Lad etc. When you get onto death metal itself definitely start with all of Death's stuff it's all magnificent and the original old school bands like Obituary, and look for bands where you can reasonably understand what they're saying. Pestilence - Consuming Impulse, Atheist - Unquestionable Presence, Carcass - Heartwork, Hypocrisy - Abducted are good places to start. Although I always preferred high screams to growls so maybe those records just worked particularly well for me to begin with.
