I have very much lost my taste for albums that focus on chugs and "being brutal" so on paper I shouldn't like this nearly as much as I do. It's all in the execution though, and these guys are a case of using those elements because it makes sense for the sound, rather than them being shit songwriters. I mean they can CLEARLY riff, and create atmosphere, and work in good melodies, but a lot of the time they just need those "caveman riffs" while Matt loses his mind over the top. His vocals are what tie it all together in a way that prevents it from feeling stale imo.

I'm with Durrzo on this one. Though I will say I wish there was more melodic elements on here like in Pale Light and Face the Blade. They really leaned into the tuff on here, which isn't a bad thing bc they pulled it off brilliantly but yeah slight bummer in that regard

More melodic instrumental parts and ditch the cleans.

Surprised to see so much complaining about the cleans when they're quite a small part of the overall sound. I'm not a huge fan but I think they work better in some tracks than others. I like the way they use them to open up Cursed, and are generally used well as accents in that song. I don't want them using typical choruses like Easily Erased does, but I don't mind them making brief appearances here and there for a change of pace.

Really wish we got more stuff like A Pale Light and the closer. The breakdowns are fucking STUPID heavy but the overemphasis on chugs brings it down a bit towards the second half. But my god when they go all in on the melody and atmosphere it absolutely soars.

More melody would be ideal in the future, agreed with all on that one. Most of the top moments here have lots of it. I like them being disgustingly heavy but they could definitely afford to back off on that a bit and give us some more variation. They're clearly expanding their sound though, so I'm happy with what we got here.

I like how chaotic this album can get at times. These guys know how to write a breakdown too.

there is truly only so far you can push this sound, it's been beaten into the ground over the years



whereas with the skramz renaissance it allows for lots of experimenting and that's why we're seeing so much quality
