This definitely feels like the Defenders of the Faith to Firepower’s Screaming for Vengeance… if that makes any sense

Gates of Hell has an absolute banger of a solo. Crown of Horns is a meaty ballad that gives me some Blind Guardian vibes. Have never cared much for JP but this has some good stuff on it.

"Defenders of the Faith to Firepower’s Screaming for Vengeance"

100%. Stylistically and in that they're a matching pair. Priest has rarely sounded the same on consecutive albums, but they sure picked the right ones to double up on.

Even the cover art choices suggest Screaming & Defenders -- look at the colors, the diagonal lines on Firepower, and that the shield is the same shape and size as the Metallion.

They even added a bit of progginess here too, which was surprising to me. I know they've occasionally dabbled in prog before, but the off-kilter riffs and rhythms were a little more prominent on this one. Especially on Panic Attack

I'm torn between 3.5 and 4 but I think Halford's vocals deserve the 4 (studio magic or not). Anyway, it's a solid record even if you ignore the fact these guys have been getting the senior discount for a while.

I do think it suffers from being overlong. You really have to justify a 50+ minute runtime and I'm not sure they do that here. Still, I didn't dislike a single track. Many of them will wind up in my regular Priest rotation.

That's all fair. And yeah, Halford's vox really elevate this one a lot (as he also did with Firepower, of course)

I thought Rob was gonna lose it back in 2014 tbh. He had some shaky moments on Redeemer of Souls, but Andy Sneap really knows how to pull out the best performance from Rob. He really does an exceptional job on this record (and Firepower).

Real talk though, Ritchie is not getting the credit he deserves. We would not be getting albums of this quality if KK was still in the band. His material in KK's Priest is pretty damn generic.

Took me a long time to bother to give this a spin, since I didn't care at all initially. But damn, this album is not "excellent considering the age of the group" - it's a real rocker of an album, even for a group of 22-year-olds.
