Dickinson has some incredible performances under his belt but he's never been able to hit notes the way Halford can

"what's the verdict tho"
Yeah as much as I've always loved Maiden over Priest, Halford is in way better shape than Bruce, or at least he sounds better.

"Senjutsu is technically shorter than Book of Souls, I think it's still the most egregious example of that issue. Seriously, three 10+ minute songs placed at the very end? They couldn't space those songs out at all?"
Senjutsu was insultingly bad. They sound even older than they actually are.

Yawn. Senjutsu was a perfect Maiden album for now, as this is for Priest

Andy Sneap did a great job on this. Sounds huge

I didn't love Senjutsu but I think reunion-era Maiden has been remarkably consistent and even a stinker like Dance of Death had a handful of highlights. I don't think the problem with Maiden is editing per se, the problem is them apparently not knowing when they're stretching out uninspired bits. When they're on their A-game I eat up every second of those long songs. I think Book of Souls was 95% of them on their A-game, and I've always preferred them leaning into their proggy side. It's the one thing they've always had over Priest for me.
That said, JP has really captured lightning in a bottle on these last two, sounding every bit as good as they did during their heyday. Perhaps my only criticism is that it all sounds rather iterative of stuff they've already done (not to mention the countless power metal bands inspired by them), but they're still doing it at a higher level than everyone else. And, yes, Halford is in much better vocal shape than Bruce. Both bands still slay live.

I remember being at odds with you on Senjutsu, so I'm glad we both dig this one.

re: Tipton, MetalInjection's review states that he plays the solos on at least "Sons of Thunder" and "Vicious Cycle". listening back, the second solo in "Thunder" is basically straight picked eighth-notes (though it's cool harmony stuff so it didn't stick out as overly simple) and "Cycle" is also pretty slow and straightforward, so that sounds entirely plausible to me.

Halford has no business sounding this good. He's like two billion years old

that's no way to talk about Metal Santa

yea I wouldn't be surprised if majority of the guitar is just Richie and Andy
|

Well Glenn has Parkinsons
He can only play for short periods of time

Pretty sure it's Richie and Andy plus some symbolic contribution by Glenn.

I think so too

I actually like this a hair bit more than Firepower. Incredible. And incredibly consistent. So tight and powerful, the collective fusion of everything good in Priest. Thank you boys.

Wow, a 4 on average rating still. Really looking forward to this one, somehow I doubt it will be the same league as Firepower for me though.
