I think I'd like "Yes, and?" a lot more if it wasn't so connected to the whole drama thing... and if TikTok would stop showing me the damn chorus all the damn time

Okay I don’t usually comment on review quality but come on man. She’s a 2/10 on the “this artist is a piece of shit” scale. Give it a rest.

Ari has definitely done and said problematic things including the homewrecking, but I also struggle to think of someone who is as big as her who has been through more. Her trauma is not an excuse, but it helps explain and I think that interplay of trying really hard to be okay but then knowingly and willingly fucking up is what has made her last few albums so interesting.
You could maybe ascribe this to "reading too much" into the albums but I think there actually is plenty there, plainly in the texts that have been shouting "I am not okay" even when she is singing about finding the love of her life for the umpteenth time. I mentioned this in another thread, but I don't like Ariana because she's this shining example of what a person should be, I like her because she nakedly displays how messy life can be and doesn't even try to pretend otherwise. It's refreshingly honest from celebrities that seem tirelessly manicured like Beyonce or Taylor Swift.
I think this album has does the best job of painting that nuance without any extreme assertions and his maybe her strongest work to day. I've listened five times already and I'm frankly blown away. It still has room to rise

All you can do is write what you care about. If an artist's life outside the music colours your impression of their music, especially if it feel relevant to the story of the album, then I say go for it.
I don't follow Ariana, her music, or her relationships but I had heard about her recent relationship. All I know is, she has a bloody great voice and she's going to be in the Wocked movie.
That's my pigeon, anyway.

I just do not see how her relationship choices affect my life. What comes to mind when considering what is “unnacceptable” for an artist to do, are things that are difficult for me to understand and accept on a moral level. Things it doesn’t feel like humans should be capable of. With the fucking deluge of sex crimes committed by well known artists, this whole enduring narrative that Ariana is some horrible person comes across as tiresome and petty.
And if we are really taking up arms for the Holy Vows of Marriage, why not criticize the dude who left his god damn wife? People act like Ariana has this magical pussy power that makes all men drop their entire life to grovel at her feet, as if they have no volition of their own. A man who does that is either not in a healthy relationship, or is a total piece of shit himself.

"I just do not see how her relationship choices affect my life."
They probably don't. At least, I hope they don't. That wouldn't be good.

Ari's relationships don't affect my life at all, but they do help inform her art. I don't think they are beyond criticism, but I'm with you in that it's pretty benign in the grand scheme of things.

the t/t is far and away the best track on the album imo, just like how on Positions the t/t was also the clear winner

Neither Ari nor the guy's actions are good at all, and I'd normally be able to accept separating the art from the artist, but Ari's making the artist part of her art for at least "Yes, and?" which makes it ever so slightly tougher to look past it, at least for me.
That being said, I also agree that homewrecking is a super minor issue compared to sexual assault allegations or Nazi-ism statements that some artists have fallen victim to

It's not quite R.Kelly territory, which has absolutely made it hard for me to listen to his music.
I'll always have that one Sam Amidon cover. Now if only he could do Ignition (Remix).

writing an album about it doesn’t help but she probably wants people to shut the fuck up
and let’s be honest, if a man did the exact same thing, it’s not even that no one would care, it wouldn’t even make headlines in the first place. There is an extreme double standard at play here that is hard to ignore

Pinegrove came pretty close that one time Evan convinced a girl to leave her man for him.
