I love Bowie; he made a lot of my favorite albums. He had his limits, though. He struggled in the 90s - a time when he was just as creative as the lauded 70s - and never really had an impact on the mainstream again until his death. Bowie made great music and Gabriel still does. But their pop successes were fleeting.

If that cover had a phone number at the bottom you'd presume it was for a male mental health hotline

I imagine that's the intended vibe

Like every Peter Gabriel album, i think it can only appreciated when you get to the same age he had when released this album..

70...? 75...?

it only hit me the other day that im as old as peter was when lamb lies down on broadway came out and suddenly felt like ive accomplished nothing in life

this does seem like a record thatd resonate a little more strongly with folks a lot older than i (so much in particular) but i still think it stands pretty strong on its own

agreed. gonna start writing lp1 this winter and tracking in the spring ideally

also i guess i vibe with and still a lot more on the vinyl tracklist than i do on the cd/digital lol i think it fits better when following a few more upbeat jams. think the cd/digital tracklist works against it because of the ballad/non ballad pattern that runs through the whole back half

Usually, when I know I like a record, I will just listen to whichever song I want to from then on.

Last night, I listened to the entirety of 'The Beggar Lover' and went immediately into 'Road To Joy' and it was an otherworldly experience. Like being hypnotized and then snapping awake in the middle of a massive party.

I can see this being another Nick Cave 'Ghosteen' for you yeah

I think about half of this is very good but definitely a 3.5 ceiling here - bloated overall and with the weaker material there's some strong MOR vibes a lot of the time, only with a side order of unearned pomposity

"i think i like the vinyl tracklist more tbh"

Agreed, I really got used to the track order by now.

This is still growing on me, he utilizes his life experience and brilliantly transmits the feeling via his music and lyrics. Not in a pretentious way but rather subtle, works perfectly for me and hits pretty hard.

"finally jamming the in-side dolby mix through a multichannel surround system and its pretty spectacular "

Thats great, unfortunately I don't have a surround system available but I'm sure it sounds amazing.
