Not sure why komp found that so objectionable other than the fact health were praised.

Saying "most bands are chasing tropes" is compatible with also recognising the creativity of lesser known artists. (ones that kompy and others think are more worthy of merit)

Gonzos reference point for his wildly hyperbolic claims about literally the trendiest most coachella friendly commercial industrial act on the market right now

creating a narrative of exceptionalism around an act by strawmanning The Majority Of Other Music Music as generic NPC shit (without displaying anything close to a firm grip on the pulse The Acts That Are Stifling The Scene or The Tropes That Proliferate) is lazy framing, however well-intended

but that imo would be nothing to pick bones over if Health weren't one of *the* acts who have most pandered to lowest common denominator trendy vapidness within their scene. as Komp implied and as others have written here and elsewhere, there's a general understanding that Health have at least taken significant measures to make their sound more palatable, so i think that burden of proof is v much on Gonzo to establish how relevant neighbouring acts are supposedly that much more obsessed with The Latest Things if he's gonna lead with claims that strong. sets a false standard otherwise, and i v much relate to being rubbed the wrong way by it

> Saying "most bands are chasing tropes" is compatible with also recognising the creativity of lesser known artists

tldr; in and of itself no (though it's still a silly generalisation), but Health themselves have chased so many tropes that it's still an awkward claim

Again, I don't see him impyling that Health are the only exception to that rule.

did anyone imply that he had done so? the issue is that it smacks of a baseless standard used to inflate the band - which is what it is and doesn't need to be blown out of proportion; i'll be the last person to drag someone unilaterally for one duff line in a long review, but also blowback on stuff like this (however civil) is one of the most valuable ways to check yourself and up your game, and i do not love seeing it dismissed this ungraciously

Idk I don't think I'd have a problem with what they wrote if they praised any artist that I consider to be doing something interesting in contemporary industrial lol

Yeah, criticising putting health on some pedestal is fair in my view. It just came off as disproportionately harsh.

"Music is massively oversaturated, and it is indeed filled with a LOT of generic-ass bands, in every genre."

Do you disagree with this statement Johhny?

drama aside, really well written review Gonzo. I like HEALTH a lot but am admittedly one such scene tourist so can we be productive and highlight some other acts you guys think deserve recognition in the space. less accessible, overlooked, novel w/e

I've been getting really into cyanotic and rabbit junk lately, great for interesting rhythms and sampling though I still have my quibbles with both

So is this good or what? I’m intrigued by the vague (monochromatic) change in art direction if nothing else. Hopefully better than their last few

you can be as facetious as you like with it, but it doesn't make it any less defunct a premise to open a rev on. "music music is trite BUT NOT THIS BAND" give me a break lol

I'm not being facetious. I just suspect that your answer to that (as well as anyone elses answer) might explain the difference in view I have on how objectionable that quote is.
