Tyranny and Pattern of Rebirth are the only real duds for me, let down by misfitting vocals. Rest is pretty ace.

Def a lot more positive about it then you are Mars, but I also don't dissagree with your takes. With We Who Lament and the TT, they pretty much threw their best material at us before the release. Both are among my favorite songs of the year though, which bumps the entirety up quite a bit. It's super uneven though I agree.

Cmon though But What If We’re Wrong and Denials Aria are really good. Awesome atmospheric stuff.

So like it or dislike it, it seems we cannot agree on the good and bad songs lmao

I enjoyed this, but I don't listen to releases as excessive anymore since I got into audiobooks lol

My 4.0 is vibes entirely and really superficial

I feel like they overthought the songwriting a bit though

I feel it was under thought AND over thought. The closer BAFFLES me to no end. It explodes into something sinister and wonderful in the first minute but then like Abruptly cuts to almost nothing Sopranos style, for like most of the runtime fucking what?? And I’m a lengthy post rock listener so that says a lot 😆

Still not sure about that song. I like that weird structure, but I also feel you with that

It's like I said, there's little to not connection between their softer sections and the climaxes. Both seem to emerge from nothing and have no ties into each other, so you get an uneven ride where nothing *really* comes together. Feels like the quiet sections in particular are there just because they have to be.

I’ve had plenty of convos with Jamie from this band. Great guy, this is a very well intentioned record and their originality still shines through here. I do hope they stick around and don’t take as much time between records next time.

Piggybacking off what you said, the more balanced songs are much better for me here. Like But What If We’Re Wrong, Tyranny, Denials Aria, the title track. The others have fine moments too but those stand out.

Just take a moment to appreciate those moments in Contemplation Of The Beautiful. The way that middle section goes with the string motif just building and building with the massive payoff of WAAAAAAIT OUUUUT! The way the song begins and ends too ugh so goooood. Quiet sections done RIGHT with amazing song writing and performances.

Oh yeah, I don't question their integrity/if this was at all unintentional. They're professionals and put a good faith effort into this, it's just not something where I feel the parts equal a cohesive whole.

A stumble unfortunately.. nothing on this are as good as the peak moments on the debut, even a song like Skyline (not a favorite on the debut) wipes the floor with a lot of this

Only song that I'm unsure about is "Watching the Earth Sink". I actually dig "Patterns of Rebirth" especially the end. Reminds me of POD or Skindred, especially the ending prayer section.

They did a pretty cool walkthrough with Louder for each track. It's worth the read if you enjoyed this album.

As I stated before the review, the seperation between vocal styles and instrumentation is like oil on water on all of the songs. It's seems apparent the band wrote the songs first, sent them in an email and told the guest vocalists to pick one they liked and just put something to one these the best you can to which most could not. It's probably about time they decide to find a full time singer that can actual write a line or just nix the idea of guests completely...cuz it ain't working on this album and sort of worked on the last one.

I think A Dream in Static had a lot more memorable melodies and I'm struggling to even hum one single line or riff from this one by memory

I don't think that's what they do at all. From what the band has said about the process, they pick specific vocalists for each piece, have melody and lyrics in mind, and then allow the artist some creative input. The only song where that isn't the case is "Patterns of Rebirth" which wasn't even slated to make the album originally.

Man, I'm really wanting to see this Liam Neeson movie now lol.

Something I find myself wondering with talk of the Lesser Evil horns, is maybe the familiarity of people here with the source material or direction for their sound? I never got the impression that they were fake or cheap because they just sound like TOP horns to me—listen to "Oakland Zone"; that's probably their best produced album—the ones on this track sound pretty damn similar to me. Maybe it's just not a pairing you like? West coast horn sections have kind of a bombastic sound in their clusters that you don't normally hear alongside rock band / metal band instrumentals—they jump out for sure, but as a person who listens to some of that music, they sound pretty legit to me.
