See, when I come looking for screamo, the last thing I want is a sound that's too clean. You need that emotion to really drive things home, and the more you polish things up, the less authentic it feels. Sterile prod in general is a turn-off but especially in a genre predicated upon its ability to attach itself to a listener's mood/memories/etc.
Now you can get TOO raw/low-fi (lot of black metal commits this sin) but this mix is far from that realm. Have some complaints but nothing that warrants much of a rating deduction.

as far as cleanliness goes, that's actually one of my only gripes with Modern Grotesque - the clean guitars felt a bit TOO crispy clean for me. this dirties it all up just enough while still having the clarity of "good production" that a lot of screamo is missing - kind of a best of both worlds thing for me.

Very fair. Going back to La Dispute, their first release feels so much stronger than their most recent one and part of it likely comes with it feeling less authentic with them cleaning it up.
Music like this generally takes me a bit more time to digest to pick out all the intricacies. I guess what I should have said it wasn't as immediate as I was hoping! Gunna give it a few more gos.

Definitely give it time, I was kinda ambivalent at first but it really opened up over time. Second half is very grandiose, think it deserves more credit than it's getting early on.

dope review, lot of cool shit going on here. love the black metal-y bits especially. are there any other notable bands that mix bm with screamo like that? i think i remember Rinoa doing something like that

Very different execution, but ostraca from earlier this year is a punishing skramz/black metal mix. Worth a check but don't expect much remorse from it lol it's beastly

Hell yes man, they've really improved from their prior release. This could get a rating bump in the future.

we came out like tigers were one of the more notable skramz/bm hybrids (and members went on to form bm band dawn ray'd after)

Been mostly quiet for skramz so if we're gonna rally around something, this is the one.
