Great review! So You Are Tired brought me to tears when hearing it for the first time on my way to work yesterday. When I walked into work I had a coworker ask me if I was okay, to which I reassured them I was and had just been listening to the new Sufjan album, and they told me they understood because they’d just listened to it the night before

I think Javelin is a quality album, but I'm really struggling to see why many are going quite so nuts over it. It comes across more as an amalgamation of Illinois, Adz, C&L and The Ascension without really establishing its own personality or hitting the heights of any of those. There's really nothing here I haven't heard from him before.
Maybe I need to sit down and really concentrate on the lyrics.

Why does he have to switch up his style for an album to be loved? Yeah it’s very much a mix of all his previous styles that’s why it’s amazing. Lyrics are amazing too.
Might be a 5 eventually, def AOTY

The comparison is just so blatantly obvious to me, it sounds very much like a combo of Illinois and C&L

this album definitely has its own unique identity in his discog but sounds more like Illinois than anything if we must compare. only sounds like C&L in the sense that it's a Sufjan album on which he plays guitar. otherwise very different

For me, it's not JUST that he hasn't switched his style, it's that everything he does here he's done better before. It's still great - no argument there - I'm just so used to him surpassing himself in one area or another, and this is his first proper album since I initially discovered him when Illinois came out that he hasn't.
It may very well just be me and I will read this in a year's time and laugh at my own idiocy, but I was one of the few who was completely floored by The Ascension (and Carrie & Lowell) and really, really wanted the same feeling here.
Happy you're all getting so much out of it though, (Shit Talk is the best).
