cool review. i think i dislike the lyrics a tad more than you even. yeah, that "better late than forever" line is awful. overall they are just so nonsensical/cryptic in a kinda pretentious way, doesn't sit well. the early records were way better at that.
the album overall really is pretty amazing though. it's a fine balance of fan service and pushing forward. not sure all the more experimental passages and interlude-ish things work for me, but all the longer songs are fantastic basically.
also: gina's solo in "last word" is fucking amazing and 2:58 in "...under the wheel" is like a prime isis moment, love it

was always disappointed this was the band anyone recommends when looking for bands like mastodon

If I had one nitpick in regards to the tracklist I'd switch "Shine" and "Adonyne" places.

@Tranth Early Baroness sounds a lot like early Mastodon but that comparision stops with Red. I think people also relate the two just because Blue and Crack the Sky are regarded as their own respective prog metal seminal albums and they were released on the same year.
I like both but I'd agree they are vastly different bands.

I can’t stand Choir, weakest song in here imo

Made the mistake of listening to this at the gym. It’s alright I guess.

Choir is one of my favorite songs on this record

I wish this rocked a little harder, but it's still very good
also what's with all the slander for Purple and Shock Me? I liked Red and Blue back in the day, but Purple is my most listened-to record from them these days.

Purple is fine, production aside. It contains some of their best songs, like Kerosene and Chloring & Wine. Shock Me is a bit bland but it serves its purpose with dignity.

"shock me" is a total banger ofc

Yeah shock me is kind of an obvious pop thing I suppose but I like it still and I definitely played it to death when it dropped too. I swear some people really just have it out for anything that reminds them of modern radio rock in any capacity ("poptimists" in particular, bizarrely enough)

Does Baizley still sound like he's singing doped up on muscle relaxants on this

I don't know when this band hits they hit. I've always loved the softer interludes and they follow it up with the chugga chugga. When you can actually hear what's going on, there's always interesting overdubs and layering

Is Magnolia having almost the exact same melody and progression as Steel That Sleeps the Eye on purpose?

The harmonics at the beginning are also really close to the harmonics at the beginning of Crown and Anchor too

Beneath the Rose is yummy, this band is always good but never really clicks to anything more for me
