"most of her wordplay is actually pretty decent"

I told my friends you were the one

After I'd known you like a month

And then you kissed some girl from high school

And I stayed in bed for like a week

When you said space was what you need

Waited by my phone like a goddamn fool

And now it don't mean a thing

God, love's fucking embarrassing

Just watch as I crucify myself

For some weird second string

Loser who's not worth mentionin'

My God, love's embarrassing as hell

And I consoled you while you cried

Over your ex-girlfriend's new guy

My God, how could I be so stupid?

You found a new version of me

And I damn near started World War III

Jesus, what was I even doing?

this is what a lifetime of simping Taylor Swift does to your standards

I mean yeah, you can pick the worst example(s) and cite them as a rebuttal. She definitely stumbles here at times as I said in the review, although in "get him back!" I think it's pretty clear she isn't trying to be serious or taken seriously in any way.

But I think that more often than not, the lyrics are decent. Some are even pretty good, like:

"Every girl I ever talked to told me you were bad, bad news / You called them crazy, God, I hate the way I called 'em crazy too"

"When am I gonna stop being wise beyond my years and just start being wise? / When am I gonna stop being 'a pretty young thing' to guys?"

I definitely get that it's not everyone's cup of tea but I think her wit/sense of humor here is on-brand for the type of music she's making.

i literally just posted the first two verses of the song you claimed was the best on the album lol

don't mind most of the lyrics here, but trying to pass them off as witty or 'clever' for their occasional smug, high school canteen-tier clutch at smartarsery does a disservice to the candour and emotional immanence that are ultimately what see em through

I mean she’s successful because she’s catering to other teens who are also going through edgy feelings in theory right, and then my dude sowing I guess 🤣

I actually think Swift is a phenomenal lyricist so I don't think that's quite the jab you intended. ;-)

Yes, lots of this album can come across as highschool-ish and I won't debate that point, but given that's still very much in her general age group/sphere of social influence, I'm a lot more willing to adapt my expectations.

"When am I gonna stop being 'a pretty young thing' to guys?"

pretty sure Leo DiCaprio has standarized the cap age at 25.

Love Is Embarrassing doesn't have the best or worst lyrics here, but I find them (and her delivery) to be pretty humorous and self-aware.

Her vocal delivery in the verses, and that bridge, are what makes it my favorite here.

I mean this is pretty teenage angst, but who hasn't felt these feelings before?? Like even adults can relate.

"a song that sounds so much better in context than it did as a single"

That gives me hope for the full album, because my GF and I listened to bad idea right? as a single, and the both of us thought it was missing something

Girl core music.

It’s interesting. There’s something infinitely fake, calculated, and artificial. As if a 40 year old (male?) had a fantasy about a teenage girl, teen angst, and all of it

Ultimately it probably doesn’t matter — it’s catchy. Good enough not to want anything better…
