'Falling Down' is def top 5

I guess my favourites here are: Kind Ghosts, Evening Star, Falling Down, Chaos of the Universe, Listening to the Higsons

I'm thinking maybe 'O Child' might gatecrash that selection eventually

'I Fucked It Up' is goofy in a great way too - tbh the first six tunes are really strong and win you over completely, whatever followed would have been acceptable. It does get a little patchier after that point but still some good stuff later.

Is indeed Boney :D

Didn't realise 'Higsons' was a cover....'Kind Ghosts' and 'Chaos of the Universe' now officially my top 2.

Also now I've read it can't help but hear Jason Lytle's backing vocals here, which is a great enough thing anyway.

'Daddy's Gone' featured on the 'Dark Night of the Soul' album before this, though in a different version (with Nina Persson providing vocals) - can't say it's one of my favourites here, again has that sort of light Beatles'y vibe.

Prob in my bottom four here.

After a bit of documentation and reading Sunny's review, I think I'm ready to hear this one.

And yes, it's my first Sparklehorse.

‘Falling Down’ moved top two but still like ‘Chaos’ a lot

‘O Child’ feels the most trad ‘music box falling to bits’ Sparklehorse tune, def second best ‘ballad’ after ‘Falling Down’, makes a couple of the later ones close to redundant. Prob a main critique of the album there, plus a few too many MOR Beatles-y touches at times for my tastes. Great album though.

Bit surprised Chaos seems to rank so high, that’s a mid/low tier cut for me, kinda wish it fit a bit more with that Neil Young-esque riff.

they should have included 'morning hollow' in the album again as a joke, given its inclusion on the past 2 sparklehorse LPs

@Doof, it depends, while his softer stuff tends to be my preference, I do rank some his louder/noisier tunes like Pig and Hammering the Cramps very highly. Just don't think those types of songs here are particular highlights.

Forgot this is out. Don't think I've actually heard a full Sparklehorse album, might have to start here after reading this review.

Hah @Phero

I'd be interested to know how much of this was truly intended as part of an "album" per se, as posthumous releases go this is interesting in that it does feel quite genuinely like an album Mark might have put out, though in a way it's almost too obviously constructed like a Sparklehorse album in some ways - it covers just about very space on the Linkous bingo board, if you will; you have the pretty, melodic indie pop tunes, the lo-fi rock tunes, the music box moments, the slowcore tunes, the country tunes.

Sowing as what I just said indicates, this is a decent sampler of most of the sounds Linkous covered over the course of his career, and the quality is mostly up to par, that said I'd still recommend giving at least It's a Wonderful Life a full spin before this.

“Kind Ghosts” more like “Kind of Perfect” innit?
