People write better music when they're depressed this is just a fact of life

Glad Pat is happy though, he deserves it.

will never get over how fucking stupid of a narrative that is lmao

just because some bands happen to drop off when they get happier does not mean being depressed is needed to make good music and plenty of bad music was made by depressed people too

that said i am not checking this lmao but i am lukewarm on their old stuff anyway

Gates did the emo-to-less-emo transition the best on Parallel Lives, I usually measure other attempts up to that standard. Curious/cautious to check this.

This is…fine? Pretty clear step down from their other stuff. I'm a sucker for Pat's voice and he sounds great here, so there's that at least.

This isn't bad, but holy hell is it inconsistent. Has no remote idea what kind of album it wants to be.

Yeah some of the "happy" songs here actually have a lot of enjoyable energy and bounce to them (take notes, Pianos), but they're sandwiched between other songs that share no stylistic similarities. Just a mess.

Which is to say nothing of tracks a la "A.M.P." that are outright duds

2.5 - 3 range feels right but maybe I'll give this another shot.

"Lot of correlation =/= causation lessons were not learned here" mostly j this [2] didnt rlly mean to come across grumpy i have just always thought that take was dumb lol

have definitely met some artists who feel like they shouldnt get help for themselves to "help" their art but being depressed does not make you productive so a lot of people cant even make the most out of creating in that state and it unquestionably hurts their craft

You're totally right but there is some truth to that narrative for emo bands like this. Same thing happened to Turnover and Citizen
