"and Mars I disagree with you about Owls. It maybe got caught some kind of viral reddit pep but it's pros far out weighed it's flaws and it proved to be not an easy success to replicate"
Ehh its pros were wildly overstated, there wasn't anything engaging about what it attempted to do, especially when their prior album was so much more interesting.
"Some good stuff here but definitely gets a little too zany quite often."
Zany yes, but they keep that zaniness contained admirably. If anything, this album could do with being a bit more outwardly zany lol

Ewww, progressive metal with circus music predilections!? This seriously isn't too bad tho, anyone into this should have checked Unexpect also.

Oh we can talk sp0der band all day my man lol
|

conductor's departure is the one in question, not technically circus metal (lol) but there's a zaniness to a lot of the riffing and solos on the record (bridge solo on complete demise, main verse riff on better grieved, the great juggler ((o shit)), cold heart swaying from demented procession vibes to downright maniacal, etc), and the way the band play their instruments just channels clown town in my head (esp in a lot of the off kilter drum fills, overlapping legato in some of the counterpoint, drum tom tone feeling almost cartoonishly bonky, etc).
by comparison though, this fleshvessel record seems zany in a way that makes more sense on the tin, they do just be tossin the entire kitchen sink of halloween spooky at you. feels like winterhorde's maestro on crack.

it is one of a kind that's for sure, lots of weird scales and augmented intervals they use like Gorod. Made a twitch streamer try to do a blind playthrough of Juggler through Rocksmith custom tracks and he about had an aneurysm, what a trooper that guy. shoutout chaotic060

Gotta give this one more proper listen.

lmfao he's sick for going through with it, and kudos to the sick kent out there who chucked an anata custom on there. and ye the melodic aspects/scales def contribute heavily. wish more bands attempted similar stuff, feel like groups like anata/gorod/extol/etc make note choices that don't really get replicated elsewhere which was always a bit odd to me given how heavily replicated other things are (klezmer, whole tone, melodic minor, dissonant shindigs, etc), maybe not conventionally m/ enough

I caught the gist of what he's blabbering on about. I think.
Yeah, I usually like the notes choices Extol make, so I'm not a slave to a conventional approach in that regard. This, not so much. I do appreciate the effort though.

if ull mfers can distinguish bdm from slam or "sounds like dso" from dissonance u can probably figure out what a klezmer or wholetone scale is i have inordinate faith in the denizens of this music forum
didn't end up being too keen on this record, though i appreciate the silly levels of effort it probably took to concoct

Probably an assessment that holds up for a lot of prog/tech releases, haha

"This seems very hit or miss for most people lol."
Well, it's a very weird release for sure. One of the weirdest albums I've heard in a while. It mixes too many things, and that's always a very risky enterprise. The Unexpect comparison laid by DePlazz is very on point. So many bands came to my mind while listening to this I almost lost count:
Kekal, Diablo Swing Orchestra, Unexpect, Thy Catafalque, Le Grand Guignol, Transcending Bizarre?, Cradle of Filth, Gorguts, A Forest of Stars to name a few...
I need to give this more spins to wrap my mind about it, but I could end up considering this either a masterpiece or a mess. What I do know for now is that it's a weirdly nice effort
