"Little surprised at the muted reception for the softer moments"
Yeah I love the contrasts
|

^ i like them too. Gives a nice balance to the collapsing building sound and is also just really well done

i dig the contrast i think im just a little tired of everybody feeling they need to write a deftones song and that being the primary vessel so many bands wanna approach melody these days. but yea i mean usually my favorite albums in this sound are pretty balanced and have a lot of melody. its j how you do it

I agree with that too. I hate hearing about gazey stuff in core cause i usually find it more just means “Deftonesy.” Why Becomes How was the only one i thought of with the ‘Tones, but the chorus makes enough of a difference that I’m fine with it.

I didn't think this sounded very deftones.

I'm not even sure why thats seen as a negative, melodic ethereal atmosphere all the way with this style at this point. Kinda tired of "pure heavy rippers" being the only things that get love on these types of albums.

it j gets to a point where when youve heard one youve heard them all. not even a problem w softer songs in general (my aoty is fuckin heavener for gods sake and i dont even really listen to much heavier music nowadays lol) just fatigued the specific paintbrush they used on the canvas

@Ven
it’s not inherently a bad thing, but if something’s got gazey influence or melody or whatever, I’d like it to at least be something other than a touch of Deftones. There are, like, a billion other bands. At least remind me of Slowdive, or something, on occasion, shit

I mean yeah sure but I kinda feel that way about the purely bludgeoning heavy tracks at times too. It gets almost too much and like if this was 12 takes on Collapse I really don't think I'd be this into it.
Honestly my guess is most bands trying it aren't super familiar with much proper shoegaze but hey. Whatever works.
|
| |
I could see that being the case, the lack of gaze influence and more just being Deftones influence, which isn’t a bad thing, it’s just not my thing
Though, imagine if these bands dig deep into the gaze and it gazes back, how much it could potentially impact their writing and incorporation of those parts. Could be stanky, but could also be BALLIN

Yeah I'm not hearing a lot of Deftones worship on this in all honesty, the softer parts do get quite dreamy and at times I do think of bands like Loathe, but they mix it up with influences from enough other bands to keep it a bit more interesting.
If anything the band I think of most when listening to this is Norma Jean.

Pfft Chingo Mandingo and the Fat Ones should be worshipping Johnny Booth, not the other way around
