Uninspired, dull and sloppy AF. 14 songs in 32 minutes, its like a bunch of demos and ideas thrown into the blender without letting them really blossom. Going from her first albums to this, JFC what are you doing Janelle?

I've never really clicked with anything she's released, but the singles from this are absolutely laughable

Really good review — agreed with many of your points, even if our scores are different. Though I wouldn't describe the album as outright dull, I did find the majority of the first half lethargic to sit through and the overall production not being punchy enough, along with many songs being treated as mere afterthoughts of an idea rather than complete tracks.
That being said, I did enjoy the more laid-back atmosphere it's going for and many of its songs on the second half manage to shine through ('Water Slide', 'Know Better', 'Only Have Eyes 42'). It's a more style-over-substance record, attempting to achieve a certain vibe at the expense of being surface-level. Whether that trade was worth it or not remains to be seen.
For now, some of its tracks are worthy of a replay. Excellent review, nonetheless!

Don't actually mind a lot of the beats on this. Nothing mind blowing but nicely chill with a few touches here and there as stated on the review. Monae's vocals, lyrics and "rapping"... very disappointing. The annoying side of vapid and just lack any of the personality shown on her early releases

This is kind of disappointing to see. Really enjoyed her other work so hopefully this is better than others are saying.

@Colton: Yeah, "autopilot" is actually a really good way to describe a lot of this album

Everyone should peep Amaarae's 2 LPs. Way more fun than this shit.

Just got to listen to this.. and damn this is sad to see a downfall this big. Damn the lyrics are so downright simple and bad, though I still think her voice is likeable there for the most part
There are so many blunders and dullness in a 14 tracks about 30 minutes album. Sure there are beats in there that are fine, but most are so basic and uninspirational.

Damn dude, I largely agree with the write-up re: her early work and I haven't heard this album yet but the single I heard largely reflects what I'm reading about the rest of it and I too am disappointed. Not even sure if I'll give this one the time.
She rocked in Knives Out tho
Gonna give Amaarae a listen, appreciate the rec

There's an uncensored version of the album cover on Janelle's Instagram page, but the censored one is definitely being circulated around the most. Guess people aren't ready to free the nipple yet 😅

Anyway, the most interesting thing about the album is all the discourse around it on social media. This thing is polarizing as hell among her fans, and rightfully so

Just another victim of the industry I guess. Probably was a team of marketing people discussing how to keep Janelle Monae relevant.
