They need 1991 Bob Rock in there, who egged Kirk on to deliver one of his best solos or to say "I'm sorry but no". Now I feel they just have yes men not telling them shit because "bro it's Metallica, can't say that to them"

lmao yeah i think there's a direct correlation between bob rock leaving and kirk's solos becoming more and more lazy (even if i generally enjoy his style).
even if his 90s solos were a bit less technical/interesting compared to the 80s there still seemed to be a sense of composition to them.

Even though the Black Album solos weren't too technically exciting, I think a lot of them were some of his best. You could at least tell that he put some thought into them and tried to make the compliment the songs.... My Friend of Misery, in particular, is awesome.

I feel that opening paragraph hard. So much of music's appeal to me is rooted in nostalgia, and/or the (mostly futile) chase to achieve the same emotional highs that my all-time favorites once provided me.
After Ride The Lightning, Death Magnetic is weirdly my 2nd favorite album of Metallica's (I'm a fringe fan at most, admittedly) -- so, I'm anything but dismissive of this record's potential to hold my interest.
Great review.

i agree about the solos on the black album. definitely kirk's best when it comes to the musical storytelling. they are not as complex as the four albums before, but the solos for "the god that failed" and "the unforgiven" are in metallica's top 10.

Death Magnetic is underrated

Death Magnetic painfully needs a proper remastering. The chorus of Crown of Barbed Wire is easily James best vox take on the record.

I really don't mind if this is by-the-numbers. Metallica's kinda earned that right with all the solid albums they've put out over their career. I expect this album to be a fun blast of Metallica goodness that you can just sit back and enjoy

fun fact: this album actually takes 72 seasons to get to the end

despite being bloated to all hell there was a solid 40-45 minutes of really good material on hardwired (side a + spit out the bone) and that's the measuring stick i'll be judging this album against.

Weak album as fuck, worse than Hardwired, but I'm gonna spin it maybe once more or twice

This beginning of this review made me think of Fall Out Boy *Heart Emoji*

Good reading, especially the first paragraph ;) I've never been stuck in the past, at least not for long, but it's something deeply human. We start dying far too soon and don't even realize it.
Metallica died decades ago but, like any old fan, I'll be checking this out

They will never learn that their newer songs are too long will they?
