The title track is so addictive. Love the run from Michin to Happy too.

enjoyed this, but felt the moments where she strays away from her older sound here were way better, because nothing on the more lo-fi housey side here stands up to the eps which absolutely slap

Pretty much all of it is better than pretty much everything off the EPs.

It doesn't have as much of that unaffected charm as some of her early stuff, but part of that appeal was the freshness of the approach - and that can only last so long. This is better. She's really grown as both a producer and a writer, and she's doing some really interesting stuff - listening to this is like experiencing about 20 different electronic genres in 45 minutes; I've never heard it done quite as effectively as this before.

Definitely room to grow, but a more substantial and satisfying listen than her early EPs - even if EP2 (in particular) was kind of amazing.

“ listening to this is like experiencing about 20 different electronic genres in 45 minutes”

At the expense of any sort of cohesion or tastefulness. It’s certainly more ambitious but - like the new Sudan archives - the everything but the kitchen sink approach, however novel, is not “better” in terms of coherence. Restraint and subtlety were two markers of what made her first two ep’s great. Those qualities are absent. When she can use those features to smooth out the hedonistic new approach then we’ll be talking but for now it’s a bust for me.

A light cruise of your ratings I can see how the novelty of excess in this is appealing to you though. I think “novel” electronic music appealed to me a lot more when I was early into my exploration of it as well, which seems natural.

There's something to be said for the hedonistic approach though imo if we treat it as an intentional rejection of coherence idk

You can treat it any way you like, what I enjoy isn’t the end-all-be-all of course, but regardless of if that’s the intent it still has to land. Which, for me, in this case it does not.

Plus I think the whole “it’s INTENTIONALLY _______” in art excuse is a little thin, because good art that is subversive should be able to speak for itself.

Fair enough. For me though, it does land; she holds it together with her personality, and I really enjoy all the little micro-moments and tonal shifts. Good comparison with last year's Sudan Archives - they're both active albums that demand engagement to get the most out of and the cohesion only emerges after you've spent a long time in their company. You have to shift your outlook, and that's what makes this so innovative in my opinion.

I'll always love early Yaeji, but for me, this is a definite progression.

Your comments actually reminded me of Dolores Umbridge: "Progress for the sake of progress must be discouraged... where we find excess - we must trim it."

Oooo I like that quote, that resonates

And I agree with all of that, particularly the emphasis on her personality being a primary driver. It makes me want to like this more than I do. In any case, in both instances I’m undeniably intrigued about what comes next. It’s a positive thing that they are both moving on to new things all things considered

I'd never heard anything from Sudan Archives until last year. Not my favourite genre of music (or lyrical content), but it ended up in my Top 3 in a particularly strong year.
