Satanist I think is boygenius trying too hard to be edgy, but the outro is cool.

"it's one of two songs here it actually sounds like they wrote in the same room together"
fair point even if i don't like the song

It’s funny that this came out on the same day as the new Nickel Creek album because that band actually knows how to write effective 3 part vocal harmonies in every song they write

most of the singles were good (not strong enough especially) but most of the album cuts sadly aren't hitting for me

"it's one of two songs here it actually sounds like they wrote in the same room together"
lol this is so true. I still think this is a step up from their ep that literally was just two leftovers from each artist with a tiny bit of harmonies.

I think this is really nice! It makes sense that the hype around these three would come with a lot of backlash, and that's fair. Basically I agree with a lot of what neeka has said itt.

channing can you elaborate on what makes 3 part vocal harmonies effective or not because the harmonies in "Emily I'm Sorry" get me every time

Tuna these 3 are all great singers so generally no matter what they do it’s gonna sound pretty good. But they often fall back on obvious background harmonies or call and response stuff. There’s nothing bold or interesting about their vocal choices when they sing together, it’s just that it sounds nice. And that’s enough sometimes but it’s not gonna get them above a 3.5 in my eyes.

it's confusing how so many people say all three members here are so generic but then also say it doesn't sound like they wrote the songs together

Seems like the general consensus here/RYM is about right on this one. Pretty much all the good stuff is in the first half, “$20” and “Not Strong Enough” are bangers, “Emily I’m Sorry” is a solid if very typical Phoebe track, “True Blue” is a solid if very typical Lucy track, and “Cool About It” is a nice folk tune. Everything after that basically goes in one ear out the other aside from “Satanist” which does have some cringe lyrics but the rhythm section really brought it on that one.

The closer is the best. Especially if Me & My Dog has persisted on your playlists like it has for me

Not sure how I'd rank all the tracks, but the last two are definitely some of the best in my view
