Aight so

Children of light II - 1/5, (if including the video I’d have to dock an extra 1 point) this is the worst song I’ve ever heard in my entire life

A New Society - 3.5/5

HTIS - 3/5, I hated this when it was released as a single but it’s grown on me despite having shitty guitars. Her voice just kinda pulls it together

ME - 3/5, I hated this one at first also because of the shitty guitars but her voice pulls this one together as well somehow

TEENAGERS - 2/5, some of the shit Meg does with her voice on this is what I mean when I say she tries to hard sometimes. She’s already an extremely talented and unique singer. Sometimes she pushes so hard it sounds like she’s gonna pop a pink sock and it’s just not fucking necessary.

My Mirror - 3.5, classic meg this song is big good

I Just Wanna Touch Somebody - 1/5, absolute shit

Waste of Confetti - 3/5, yeah idk megs voice just really salvages shitty guitars for me don’t know what it is

Numb - 2/5, No.

Ovaries - 2.5/5, your voice can’t save that chorus this time megles

Searching for the truth - 2.5/5, almost good but too boring for the two thirds

TZIA - 2.5/5, close to a 3? Idk

Bluebird - 1/5, No

Sophia - 1/5, Fucking no

Eleven eleven - 2.5, it’s fine

I did the math and it averages out to a total 1/5

I like "Bluebird", it's a touching song but not too tearful, the effect on the voice in the last seconds of the song is curious, though.I didn't really like "I just wanna touch somebody" on the first listen, but it goes rather well on the album in fact, the chorus for example is quite catchy. I think "Sophia" and "HTIS" are the weakest songs on the album, maybe because they are co-written with other artists and not her own material? The lyrics are banal, uninspired and the Dance and Rap sides of these songs are out of place and a little embarrassing, does not fit in with the usual somewhat aggressive Alternative Rock style of Meg Myers. It seems to me that it was the producer who had requested that the track "Sophia" be present on the album. The last track "ElevenEleven" is not bad but it's a bit of an average end to the album if we compare to "Constant" and "Feather" on SORRY and TAKE ME TO THE DISCO.

People need to understand that when a band listens to the kind of fan that suddenly hates their shit when they change anything about their sound, you end up with Offspring and Weezer (two examples of self-parodic jokes that used to be good). You end up with the lowest common denominator CRAP that only exists to take your money, and the saddest part of that is YOU GIVE IT UP ENTHUSIASTICALLY. We do not need static art. Static art as a concept is blasphemy.

So Meg changed a lot. That's clear from this album cover. I'm 1/4 thru the first listen of this album, and I can already tell most of this criticism is people who seem to like My Mirror. I haven't heard this song yet, but I'm predicting it will have the strongest resemblance to TMTTD. Here it comes now, in fact...

Yeah, would have fit on that record as one of the slower numbers. But it's really not standing out to me as better than what I've heard before it. I keep waiting for this to pick up into something more intense, but it's only building subtle power. I'm gonna be shocked if it actually hooks me any harder.

So if you think this track is better than HTIS (which appears to be the most played track from this record by far: 1.6m plays)... seriously, get your head out of your ass and listen to that song with a fair and open mind. If you tweak it just a little bit, and give it the same dark gloss as the last album, it could have fit. That's true for a lot of this.

She's still in there, driving an artistic vision. She's still very talented. It isn't reasonable to expect an artist not to grow. We should thank her for being forthright and honest with us. This could have been a bullshit cash grab, and no matter what you think of her, you'd have hated that a thousand times as much as this.

TMTTD was a special album for me. There are four or five tunes on that album that I will always remember, but I don't feel it as an entire album. I may not like TZIA more than that one, but I think these tunes will be more memorable as a whole.

I've heard nothing to pan. She's trying a lot of different shit, and it's not all working out to the same degree, but it's not turning out to be the chaotic mess all these reviews would have had me believe.

Meg Myers, thank you for following your muse. When all you want is to express yourself freely, you can't go wrong. Even through some insane production trickery and some wild experimentation, you still sound like you're close to me. In the room. In my ear.

Sputnik's rating seems to be spot on.

@ postalblowfish:

"So Meg changed a lot. That's clear from this album cover"

But the question is perhaps whether it is a change, a natural evolution of the artist, or a change forced by other elements (possible pressure from the record company/label, for example)?

I also think that Meg Myers still has talent, and sincerity, and the versatility of her latest album is one of its interests. there are songs that I like and her voice is always a big interest in her music. Many of her "fans", those who have followed her since 2012 or 2015, seem to prefer her first album SORRY and her first two EPs to TAKE ME TO THE DISCO and TZIA. For my part I think TAKE ME TO THE DISCO is her most coherent, accomplished, mature album for the moment even if I like many others songs on her others albums and EPs. And it's possible that Meg Myers has not yet produced her best album, her masterpiece...after all she is still young. The weakest tracks on TZIA for me are her collaborations with others artists That HTIS is TZIA's most streamed track on Spotify by far doesn't mean much to me, at most that it's possibly the most mainstream, musically easy/lazy track on the album? The cover of "Running up that hill" is Meg Myers' second most streamed track on Spotify and it's far from being her most inspired and personal song, she has plenty of others songs worth listening to. as much on Spotify! What I like in her music is this mixture of sensitive melancholy on edge, and bursts of impulsive rage, the vulnerability and the agression...which I don't really find in HTIS or SOPHIA 144. I also feel like TZIA hasn't gotten much publicity, I've found relatively few official online reviews of the album on the sites so far, whereas for TAKE ME TO THE DISCO (also released on an independent label) there had been more reviews and interviews. But maybe that will change with the US tour kicking off next week.

From videos she has posted about the backlash towards her jarring shift in identity, she see's it as an evolution in her self-expression and mechanism by which to confront life trauma etc, but not a finality. She is aware that she will likely express herself much differently again in another 5 or 10 years. As nauseating as her current ideology and image is to me I can respect the sentiment that it is just how she is expressing herself at this moment. She has every right to that.

Yeah, I have watched a few of those, too. It just sounds like she is just trying to figure shit out and music is one of her key components to do so

When people criticize on social networks about her fairly recent look changes or the visuals of her new videos it's irritating and lazy because when you follow the career of an artist it's the songwriting, the creativity and the quality of music, lyrics and concerts that should matter. I just hope for her that her strong beliefs are a support in her life, and not something that pulls her down. There is a rather interesting interview published on the Uproxx site in 2018 when TAKE ME TO THE DISCO was released, where she spoke among other things about her ambivalent opinion about religion/beliefs, she seems/seemed lucid with the limits of the beliefs... but always with a strong attraction for these abstract things.

Also the pandemic, the COVID since 2020 must not have helped her. Before TZIA, what did you think of her last two EPs? They came out in 2020 so she was already in that spiritual phase in her life, because if I remember correctly she said something completely changed in her life at the very end of 2018 (after the TMTTD tour). I found these 2 EPs uneven, there are songs that I skip But as always with her there are songs that I like a lot ("Last laugh", "The underground" and to a certain extent "True liars")
