Djent is an onomatopoeia of a certain sound the guitar makes. It's like chugging, but you move your picking hand up to the second pickup and using a more technical strumming pattern that makes the "djun djun djun djun djent djun djun djun djun djent djun djun d d d d djun d d d d djun d d d d d d d d d d djun 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1" sound.

Do I consider it a genre? Fuck yeah

Nice writing, I enjoyed the review even if I don't agree personally.



I've never really understood the criticism around remaking the same kind of album or not progressing one's sound. I see it each time a new Meshuggah or Periphery album drops. They're two of my favourite bands, and I love that they keep exploring the same sound. In a genre that many have attempted to copy and borrow from, both bands have perfected their version of it and I could take five more albums of the same style applied to different songs. Especially as their playing and vocals just get better over time.

I'd much rather have that than hear them chasing new trends or trying to invent a new sound. So to me, the new album is fantastic. I would agree with your POV more if it were a sound I've grown tired of, but I really haven't yet.

It is fascinating to see when that is acceptable and when it's not in the eyes of Sputnik. Sputnik seems to want Periphery to iterate tremendously with each release, but also is happy to slap a 4/5 on everything Counterparts has ever released despite them being locked into the same formula for a decade.



Not at all a slight on Counterparts, I am very much in the "4 everything they release" camp. Just an interesting dichotomy.

Probably like 5 full listens deep and Silhouette doesn't do it for me, even if I'm more amiable to Periphery's Spunce-off songs than some. Crush is still better imo.



Wax Wings is already a top-5 Periphery song. That final vocal section is just insane and I love Mrak-focused songs.



Dying Star was a slow burn but I really like it now. Reminds me of Good Tiger.



Atropos is also becoming one of my favorites. Reminds me of Absolomb.
