"reptile will likely always be this bands crowning achievement in my mind"
Except Omega is better than Reptile, obv

I would literally sleep with this band if they'd promise to stop introducing string sections, either real or electronic, into music, ever again. It never comes across as anything but corny.
But yeah this certainly is the most Periphery album ever made. By that I mean partway through, these songs could have been on any of the last handful of albums. They certainly found their (admittedly diverse) niche and are sticking to it. I agree with just about every word of this review....I want to hear more songs that are singular, bold ideas that don't sound like a patchwork stitching of so many disparate sounds & ideas. It makes for homogenous, exhausting listens.
Maybe this will grow though! Who knows. They usually don't and I have to cherry pick 1-3 good single tracks from each album.
It's an odd place to be -- knowing full well these is some top-tier near virtuosic performances by everyone involved, but that even this can get stale.

The electronics in their metal is what makes it perfect “heavy metal from the future”, hence it’s why P1 is a masterpiece

yepp this is why p4 is goated

Yeah I'll admit P4 is one I appreciated the most after 1. 'Memba the P1 hype here in like 2009 or 2010 whenever that released? The future of metal. I just wish they'd evolved more as songwriters since then.
I did get to catch them live touring P4, and while I don't listen to the thing at all anymore myself, the live show they put on for that tour was FUCKING NUTS. Reptile live....wow.
"Everything is Fine" is fun though! I didn't wince once!

The intro to Dying Star caught me off guard, thought I was listening to a Thrice song suddenly.

Periphery is my favorite band and therefore the one I'm most prone to unambiguously fanboying for, so I'm probably biased but I don't really understand the critiques here. I don't really know what else they could do under the Periphery banner without just becoming a totally different band, especially when, like you said, the main feather in their cap is their diversity. Silhouette sounds more "poppy" than any other song I've ever heard from them, in that it reminds me of some of the mellower Chvrches songs (like Afterglow, lol). This one definitely feels a bit "messier" than P4 but P4 also had some pretty weird pacing since they frontloaded the album with a massive 17 minute prog epic and then the rest was just normal songs. The individual songs on P4 feel more cohesive on their own but I think the consistency of this one is better overall.

You know, this band is trash but you gotta respect the sense of humour
