It seems like the sound they want on their albums is way more subdued and ethereal than what they go for in their live shows. It's a shame (at least to me) since I greatly enjoy the energy and the intensity that is added to a lot of their live renditions, which is mostly on the back of their drummer. For example, I am sure the last minute of Forgetting absolutely crushes live, but the drums literally sound like they are being pulled underwater during their apex.

Maybe I'm reading too far into it, but it feels like the album itself is trying to draw the exact median you would feel between apathy and rage on a lot of tracks, which leads to a lot of those build-ups that feel just flat at the end. Again, it's pretty esoteric, but I still enjoyed the album a lot. I just wish there was a little more payoff on a couple of tracks.

I love it, I feel like they've been building up to this album, and I think you're right, they're trying to tie up the music to some of the themes.

While I don't dislike this album it definitely doesn't hit me in the way every other Pile album has. But I get it, Rick said he wanted to do something different. It is different. It feels more solo-esque. I guess the disappointment for me is there's really no other band quite like Pile especially these days so the thought of never having another album that affects me like the previous ones is a bit of a bummer. Who knows where the next one will go. I do think the production is a bit wonky, though. I really want to hear Pile do an album with Albini.

Very good review and I'm inclined to agree with you outside of the final score. I think part of what I love about this one is how it keeps that intensity without needing to be loud. There's an underlying sinister quality to each track here and moments of sheer beauty and it's hard to put into words.

I think more than any other Pile album, this one's going to end up aging like wine.

Feel like I need to return to this as I think you’re right. It lacked any immediacy for me, but I recall it with a fondness that my rev doesn’t reflect fairly. Hmm…
