I'm sure this thread will be completely civil and will face no conflict at all

Feels a bit like when Cradle of Filth were the joke of exteme metal after a series of laughable releases in the late 00s/early 10s but then they dropped Hammer of the Witches and suddenly they were good again. Are In Flames good again?

this is... honestly, not awful (or at least not nearly on par with this band's sewer-level standards of awful)
it's also very far from great but hey, that's a given. some decent (if largely derivative) guitarwork, a lot of excessive mall chugging, a lot a lot a lot of Anders' godawful lyrics/depressingly clear enunciation and whiny bullshit sabotaging otherwise sound songwriting. fair cop to em ig

Bretty gud, would have 4'd if things didn't come to a screeching halt after In The Dark

Good review. I really enjoyed this, which is a relief after I bounced hard off of Battles and I, the Mask. Feels like they've struck a good balance between old and new on this one. Foregone Pt. 1 and In the Dark are my favorites right now.
The main flaw here is that Anders goes way overboard with the clean singing where restraint might have benefited the songs. As it stands, I think it could be a turn-off for older fans who might otherwise be interested in the music. I say that as someone who likes his singing voice well enough.
The only tracks I'm not feeling are Bleeding Out and Cynosure, but overall I'm pretty pleased.

Haven't checked any of their stuff since Come Clarity and I plan to keep it that way

This is the first In Flames album I've enjoyed since Come Clarity. I'm still not entirely sure if that enjoyment is genuine or just because of how low the bar has been set with the last few In Flames releases, but for now this is a fun little bop with some genuinely inspired songwriting, for the first time in a very long time.
Anders vocals are still completely sub-par but they have been for so long that I'm kinda used to it at this point.

Had to give up lurking again just to comment how much of a pleasant surprise this release was. Great review!

First listen, I don't know what Anders is trying to do with his vocals on Pure Light of Mind verses but he needs to stop right the fuck now.
Aso, terrible lyrics. Maybe the worst he ever wrote.
